Picnic on the lawn!

Sail Date: July 2011
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Southampton

Our experience in order: Boarding at Southampton, if arriving by car you line up, when called forward you move around to an "unloading area" where your luggage is taken away by porters. Then drive to the nearby car park, walk to the terminal and go through the normal check in process. Simple, no fuss, from car to ship in 20 mins!

The boat, Celbrity Eclipse. Spotless, contemporary, plenty to do and see. Cabins well appointed, staff really friendly with a good morning or good afternoon round every corner. General "feel" of the ship was brilliant, never felt crowded although at times in the evening had trouble finding a seat in any of the lower deck bars. Food was first class, all hot, tasty and well presented by chatty waiters. The cafe food was also well presented with a mindblowing choice of what to eat. Entertianment was good, accepting that different acts are not everyones cup of tea so this is really your choice, we liked it though.

The itinery, which included More Gib, Southern France, Italy, 3 ports if include Sardinia, Cadiz, Lisbon and Vigo was spot on, with ports intermixed with days at sea allowing time to relax, catch up on the sun tan etc.

Was there a downside, well yes. Why is it that even when everything is explained clearly in the documentation, and there are 45 seats on a bus with only 30 passengers that some people have to moan! and I am sorry to say mostly the older generation over 60's, it made us cringe! Otherwise BRILLIANT Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Picked Florence as its the nearest to Livorno the Italian port. Our tour was to Pisa. Magnificent! What history, the buildings, the tower, simply brilliant. I must say helped by a really knowledgeable guide which makes a massive difference.

The port is close to the town, easily walkable. This is a very small area to visit as Gib is, well, tiny! Did the rock, via cable car which was ok, met the monkeys, who were well behaved and walked back down visiting the many caves and tunnels. From a historical point of view well worht the visit, a beach resort it ain't

Yet more history. From the "Golden Gate" bridge to the statue of Christ, both almost identical copies of the orignals from San Fransico and Rio. Again many buildings of outstanding beauty.

Trip was to Rome. Did a 5 hour walking tour. No matter which way you turned there was something else with so much history it was hard to take it all in. From walking on original roman cobbles, the fountains, to the Collesium to the Vatican city just all awe inspiring. I would recommend this tour otherwise you may miss some real highlights. Around every corner something took your breath away. Fantastic

Didn't actually dock at St Tropez but Toulon several miles along the coast but our trip was to St Tropez. Very picturesque port, with yachts and boats to die for. Plenty of little back street shops and places to eat. Not what we expecte at all but charming

Lovely island, lovely white hilltop towns, rolling fields, relaxed just plain nice.

Not so impressive to look at to start with but it gets better if you move away from the port area. A busy town with plenty of shops, very hilly.
