Alaska Again

Sail Date: June 2011
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver

This was our third Alaskan cruise.

We arrived in Vancouver the day before our cruise and stayed at the Westin Grand Hotel downtown Vancouver. We travelled from the airport via the train -- quite easy and there was a stop near the hotel. Also used the train after disembarking the ship to return to the airport -- again very convenient and inexpensive.

Embarked the ship about 11:30 am. Went directly to our cabin. We ate lunch in the Lido with our daughter and son-in-law (the kids) as it was their first cruise and they could not eat in the dining room (Mariner's lunch).

The cabins were clean and tidy and the room stewards introduced themselves. The luggage arrived in a timely manner. The cabins were always in top shape and we were entertained by a parade of various towel animals.

We ate dinner in the Pinnacle Grill the first night. Everything was satisfactory and we enjoyed the meal and the quiet. The kids ate in the dining room (we had early sitting) More and they were pleased with the choices and the quality of the food. Our daughter is vegetarian and does not eat seafood or mushrooms so she could pick her choices for the next night from a special menu. I had made reservations for the four of us at the Pinnacle Grill for Monday evening. I was disappointed in the vegetarian selection -- no protein.

The meals and service in the dining room was excellent. Occasionally we ate in the Lido and we also had pizza or a burger. We decided that our preference was the dining room.

Any shore excursions we took were booked through the ship

We also enjoyed the coffee and the special treats in the Explorations Cafe.

The kids had such a good time that they bought future cruise credits.

The disembarkation process went very smoothly. Less

Cabin review: Volendam Large Oceanview Stateroom Main

Our cabin was on Main deck, near the centre staircase, elevators and laundry room. Surprisingly, it was a quiet cabin. Holland America's rooms are a good size with lots of closet space and drawers. The bathroom is small but quite functional with a bathtub (includes the shower) and a medicine cabinet. The only negative thing was the safe -- it was our first experience with a safe that needed a card swipe to open and close. We are used to inputting a code.

Port and Shore Excursions

I went on the Glacier & Gardens tour. I was delighted with the tour and it exceeded my expectations. The kids did the hike and they had a great time and were delighted with the guide. My husband took the shuttle to the Glacier and he was impressed. We arrived in Juneau at noon after doing scenic cruising of Tracey Arm Fjord in the morning. The day was somewhat overcast, temperature in the 60sF and the seas were calm. We set sail about 10 pm for Skagway.

After breakfast we walked into town and did some shopping. The walk into town took maybe 10 minutes. There are some wonderful little shops in Skagway where we bought some local artistic pieces -- glass snowflakes and sterling silver jewelry. After an early lunch we boarded (right at the dock) the White Pass train for a ride up to the Canadian border and back to Skagway. We saw bears near the train and saw mountain goats in the distance on the mountains. Again an excellent day for picture taking. We all enjoyed the excursion and we ended the day spending a bit more time in the town. The next day was scenic cruising of Glacier Bay. Again, a bonus day weather-wise. Saw some small boats near the glaciers and also some kayaks. Saw calving of the ice -- makes a tremendous noise.
