Alaskan Anniversary

Sail Date: June 2011
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver

Coming at the end of a 4 week holiday covering the Canadian Rockies and west coast cities travelling by car, plane and train we were looking forward to some total relaxation time. And that's just what we got on the Volendam. The cabin staff were extremely helpful and polite. Our cabins were cleaned almost immediately we left for breakfast every morning. All crew we encountered acknowledged us and took interest in where we had travelled from.

The Entertainment was first class but the timing of the first shows conflicting with dining times which made the second shows very busy.Food was excellent in the formal dining room - our last night aboard was our actual anniversary and we dined in the pinnacle grill - a further charge for this but what a meal - superb - one of the very best meals we have had - with very attentive service. We chose not to use the Lido restaurant much as it was a 'free for all' with some guests choosing to sit at tables well after their meal was finished More causing others to eat standing up! - Not good. Additionally after a couple of days it was a self serve area with folks stretching over food, touching breads/pastries etc then putting them back - yuck! Lastly some people using this used it as a 'trough' - the amount of food piled onto plates only to be discarded was disgraceful - greed ruled the majority of these folks.

The shop staff were nice with exception of one female assistant who really could not be bothered serving me. The photography staff were very good - we had some lovely pictures of us both taken. However the JC Black photographer was excellent and worth a visit to - her photographs were truly beautiful and a great way to commemorate our anniversary.

Finally - port calls were very good - Alaska is gorgeous - visit to glacier bay was fantastic - witnessed calving, brown bears, whales, sea otters , eagles. The time cruising glacier bay was amazing - a truly unspoilt and glorious place. Less

Cabin review: Volendam Large Oceanview Stateroom Main 3351

Quite small. Window opened out to deck so not much of a view. Sofa in cabin not of any use. TV could only be viewed comfortably from bed. However cabin was kept very clean and was tidied up each evening when our bed was turned down.

Port and Shore Excursions

Nice enough place if a bit bland - a real government town - disappointed in the layout of the place - not nearly as picturesque or old style as the others. However Mount Roberts tramway well worth the price - superb views and good trails to follow up top. Trip to Mendenhall Glacier also worth it - excellent visitor centre/museum and great waterfall to get close to. Get simple $8 bus from dockside - no need to get ship excursion package.

This port would have received a 5 if we had been the only ship in town - unfortunately there were 4 in town and it was very busy. This meant that there was a lot of 'hard sell' at jewelers in particular going on - really if we want to go into shops I'd like to browse without pressure! We took the ducks tour - very informative and worth a go. We also took the Misty Fjords tour via Taquan Air - do not miss this - it was amazing - the views were stunning and the landing in one of the lakes fantastic - we got out of the plane onto the floats and Sat in complete stillness and quiet for a few minutes - a truly magical place to which we hope to return one day. Ketchikan has a lot of character and lots of history, which is explained on various information posts through out the town. The Town is easy to walk around. There are a couple of small food booths right on the dock - I had the best cod and chips i have ever tasted from the Grizzly Shack - try it!

Nice simple town. Loved the old style wooded sidewalk and the old style buildings. Very good Railway museum and information. We did not go on any ship excursions and felt that a day in port was too long as there's really on 2 streets to look at! We did try to get on the 'brothel' tour but they were very unorganised. However this place does have character, a Sarah Palin shop which we thought was very funny but the locals took very seriously - so don't make any SP jokes in their earshot!
