Avalon's service was top notch. The housekeeping department has to be commended for their hard work and keeping the ship and our room spotless at all times. Breakfast and lunch were buffets, presented well with a wonderful assortment of foods to enjoy, but dinner left us a little disappointed. The servers were attentive, our glasses constantly being filled with the evenings selections of wine, but the choices for dinner were minimal and sometimes disappointing. I never went hungry, but did have Salmon 3 evenings from their alternative menu. My husband had steak one evening and it was like rubber, unedible.
With only one lounge to relax in after dinner, we found that most people did retire to their guest rooms after a long day and the lounge was relatively quiet. We did have some local entertainers come aboard a few nights and they were excellent, with a piano player on the other nights. The evenings are very quiet on a River Cruise, which I did expect...and so there may have been a total of 20 in the lounge enjoying the piano player.
Drinks in the lounge are very weak, so much that you don't know if there is any alcohol in your drink...charge a little more, but then offer a better cocktail.
River cruising gave us the wonderful opportunity to visit the most beautiful cities and to see many sites...such as Vienna, Prague, Durnstein and the many tours.
We would consider another cruise with Avalon in the future depending on the itinerary, but River Cruising would not be my 1st choice.
