Great time on the Mariner

Sail Date: June 2011
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Rome (Civitavecchia)

Really enjoyed the Mariner of the Seas. Loved the fitness center. The staff was friendly and we had a good stateroom attendant, waiter and asst waiter.

The food was good for the most part although the desserts were rather bland. We usually stuck with the sugar-free desserts then as they seemed to taste better than the regular desserts. Wasn't too impressed with Cafe Promenade...except the fruit salad was good.

My son enjoyed the teen club and made a lot of friends.

We met a lot of very nice people from all over the world. We ended up at a table for 10 and glad we did as we had great tablemates. Early dining was tough to get to sometimes but I couldn't get on late dining which I usually try to book.

Ports were good but it would be nice if there were some directions how to get out of the port once off the ship when you are doing it on your own. It can be a bit frustrating and some of the locals are not friendly unless you are going to use their More services (i.e. taxi drivers/tour operators).

Could've used only 1 day in Istanbul instead of 2 and would have liked the last cruise day to be a sea day instead of a port day.

Disappointed in the few people who decided they could smoke "anywhere" they wanted to on the ship...that was a bit frustrating.

Overall a very good time and would definitely cruise on this ship again. Less

Cabin review: Mariner of the Seas Large Oceanview Stateroom Deck 6 6502

Cabin 6502 - nice cabin..good size. Mediterranean was pretty calm so we were not seasick at all. Only 4 floors below the fitness center. Food (dining room, etc) are in the AFT section so it is a good walk to get there.

Port and Shore Excursions

After seeing the highlights in Athens and doing a bit of shopping in PLAKA there is not much else. Felt very dirty after touring for a few hours...only felt this way at this port stop. Must be the pollution and dirt.

Easy to do on your own.

Clean, modern city and once you get the hang of using the metro system, it is pretty easy (have turkish lira such as a 5 or 10 TL bill...insert into machine and then select 'english' language to get tokens for subway). Hit the highlights and did some shopping. Definitely be careful and don't hesitate to negotiate. Grand Bazaar was very crowded!!

Dirty city..not clean, stinky garbage laying around. Walked to train station..not too difficult but it is a good walk from port. Local train to pompeii and sorrento. Train not nearly as nice as the train from Rome to Civitivecchia.

At least from this port you can get to several other tourist areas (Capri, Amalfi coast, etc).

Just stayed around the Rhodes area...shopping and saw Palace, etc. Would've been good to go to Lindos and to the beach.
