In Ketchikan we left the kids with the grandparents and went fishing for salmon. 4 boats went out and 3 fish were caught. Go figure, we were on the boat that did not catch any fish. It was a little early in the season, I think you would have better luck closer to June. In mid June I bet each person will catch a ton of fish. If you catch a fish it costs about $9 a pound to get it home. A 30-40 pound salmon becomes expensive. 


Ketchikan

In Juneau we rented a car and visited the mendenhall glacier, The Alaska Brewery, the shrine of st therese and the Rie Munoz gallery. It was a $30 cab ride to/from the airport to get the car, but it gave us flexibility with the kids. I would suggest renting a car, even without kids. Lots of people on tours saw whales at the Shrine, but not us. Our one regret is not going on a whale watching tour, but I'm not sure how it would work with young kids. We did see whales from the ship throughout the trip. 


Juneau

In Skagway we walked around town and a car is not needed. We also rode the railway up to the white pass. The railroad ride worked out well with kids and most cars were only 75% full so we could spread out.

The neptune lounge offers a good continental breakfast and we frequently brought this food to our room to avoid crowds and allow the kids more freedom.So, we watched half the bus get off at the airport, continued on to the convention center, grabbed a quick lunch while waiting for the next bus back to the airport and jumped on an earlier flight to Seattle.
