Sail Date: Dec 2004

We had a wonderful holiday cruise aboard Celebrity's Century. The ship is an older one, first launched in 1995. We knew not to expect the latest frills. The ship is showing signs of wear and tear. There are places with stained carpet, torn upholstery and peeling paint. We saw signs of the continual battle against this, with crew members cleaning, sanding and revarnishing areas. They can't keep up, however, and the ship does need a thorough sprucing up.

Embarkation was quick and easy. We were welcomed with a glass of champagne. (Orange juice was offered to those who do not drink alcohol.) We went directly to the Islands Cafe to eat lunch and wait for the announcement that the cabins were ready. Passengers who arrived after 1:00 were accompanied to their cabins.

Due to an accident the week before, one of the ship's propellers needed repairing. Our sail away was supposed to be at 4:30. The daily bulletin let us know it was going to be at midnight. The first two days were at sea, and the ship made it to the first port on time.
