Eclipse is lovely, new and clean and well maintained, but there are quite a few areas onboard which passengers didn't seem to frequent at all while other more popular venues were very overcrowded. Our Aqua Class cabin was a little tight for two average sized people. The bed was comfortable, but the rounded corners at the foot of the bed might be a problem for those of greater than average height. The closet was smaller than those we've had on other Celebrity ships and very shallow in depth. We had to shift our clothing diagonally inside of it in order to shut the doors. Bring your own hangers as there are never enough. The huggable kind are best as they allow more items to be hung in the smaller space. The few drawers provided were very shallow and only accomodated smaller items. The storage over the bed was awkward to get into without standing on the bed. There is a small hair dryer and portable magnifying mirror, both pretty basic in quality. Because the closet was within inches of one side of the bed, we could not dress for dinner at the same time. We dressed one at a time and met later at the Martini Bar. Booking the Aqua Class cabin was a mistake and as an experienced cruiser, I should have known better. Cabins immediately under the pool deck on any ship are always subject to noise and we were awakened very early in the mornings when deck chairs were being moved above us. These cabins also have a substantial overhang above the balconies which makes both cabin and balcony shaded at all times. I found it rather claustrophobic and had I known better, I would have booked a balcony cabin two decks below ours with full sun. We tried to take advantage of our included Aqua Spa benefits, but were unable to use them as they were consistently jammed with passengers. We tried to use the Persian Garden one morning after breakfast, were issued our locker keys, robes and towels only to discover people sound asleep on the eight or so heated beds in the solarium and saunas and steam rooms full of passengers as well. We returned to the desk and were told to "come back later." We were only able to eat lunch in the Aqua Spa cafe on our first afternoon onboard because we boarded early. This facility is very small and there were never tables available at mealtimes. Everything on this ship seemed crowded with too many passengers. Our biggest disappointment was the food! We have enjoyed really fine food on our previous Celebrity sailings. The food on Eclipse was average at best. We had three meals which I would say were of very good quality. One of those was in Murano, a venue which requires an additional fee. The rest of our meals were consistently disappointing. We were a bit shocked on the first night when we discovered we had not been assigned to the table for eight we had requested in the main dining room. Our cruise documents read "Late Seating Confirmed" but we were told we were to eat in Blu and we were unable to change that arrangement although we did try. One of the most enjoyable features of cruising is sharing the dinnertime meal with others. We ended up meeting other couples with whom we eventually dined, but the onus for accomplishing that lay with us. We loved the Martini Bar. This was definitely the place to meet people and enjoy the bartenders' cocktail antics. We didn't particularly like the Molecular Bar and the odd drinks there were not our favorites. The Wine Cellar was also a disappointment. Wines dispensed from spigots, not poured from bottles. Everything at extra cost. We never saw anyone in there. We purchased the Premium Drinks Package. I'm not sure it was good value for money as the perception is you can receive any drink valued up to $12 a glass. The problem was that the list of wines by the glass was incredibly limited and very unimpressive. The PDP does not include drinks you consume from your cabin fridge, nor those ordered from room service. Coffee is best had at El Bacio. The regular coffee served elsewhere was frankly deplorable. We had an unpleasant surprise with laundry. Laundered items were returned to us rumpled and wrapped in paper. When I inquired, I was told pressing is an extra service which you have to indicate on the slip and pay extra for. We discovered they had put my husband's silk shirt which I'd clearly designated to be dry cleaned through the laundry with his underwear. It came back wrinkled and about two sizes smaller. Guest services questionned every aspect of this faux pas when I brought the shirt down to them. The woman checked the label on the shirt as if I had lied about the fabric content, rechecked the laundry slip, asked if the item was new, and seemed to doubt every answer I gave her. I asked to see a manager and was told that person was "busy". Eventually they credited our account with the value of the shirt, but insisted on retaining the shrunken relic "as evidence." We are now Elite level passengers on Celebrity, but I doubt we will cruise with them again. We enjoyed this cruise, met interesting people and the shore excursions were very nice, but the cruise fell so far short of our expectations and previous experiences on Celebrity I wouldn't risk a repeat of the disappointments. Celebrity used to be marketed as a somewhat upscale cruise ship experience which offered pampering, sophisticated service and restaurant quality meals. This was just a ride across the Atlantic Ocean for us, rather ordinary and unspectacular.
