Wonderful way to see the islands

Sail Date: April 2011
Destination: Hawaii
Embarkation: Honolulu

Husband and I took this cruise because we wanted both the cruise experience and the ability to see many of the Hawaiian islands. We were not disappointed. While Pride of America may not be the elite cruise experience,it is comfortable, offers many options and provides a great experience for seeing the islands. For all the negative reviews, I say...if you're looking for something to complain about, you will probably find it, but if you are out to have a great time, you will.

We booked 3 shore excursions..Molokini Crater snorkeling, Molihana Helicopter ride over Kauai and Downhill bicycle ride at Haleakala. All three excursions were worth it. The companies do a great job and the snorkeling was through the Pacific Whale Foundation so we supported their cause. Will recommend the helicopter tour to anyone...it was fabulous.

The ship was clean, fully staffed and had a variety of entertainment, some great, some so-so overall very enjoyable. The rooms are small, More especially the bathrooms but hey, you are there only to sleep!! Definitely enjoyed having a balcony to sit on and see the sights. The boat has 3 levels of restaurants.... The buffets have a wide variety of options but do get crowded quickly. Skyline and Liberty restaurants provide the sit down, be served meals that are very good. The only issue we had was my husbands steak was poor quality and I was given the wrong appetizer once but ate it anyway and enjoyed it. Some of the staff remembered us from earlier nights and struck up conversations. We didn't visit any of the specialty upcharge restaurants as we felt the food overall at the "included" spots was sufficient.

Felt the staff did a great job keeping you informed of events. Appreciated the free lei making classes.

If I would make any changes, it would be to provide more than just water or ice tea for the "free" drinks. Lemonade would be nice. Upcharges for even a cola is a bit excessive but we bought some from shore when we were in ports. Less

Rented a car and drove up the east coast to Rainbow Falls and Akaka falls. Located a scenic route on the map and really enjoyed the flowers, trails and coves we came across. Managed to visit Volcano National Park on our own also. Really glad we did this on our own versus paying for an excursion. We did see many buses of tours and they seemed to always be hurrying to get back on the bus. Buses would not be going on the scenic route because of the small roads or be able to stop at many of the coves and trails.

Had to disembark by 9am and flight didn't leave until 400. Able to rent a car for the day for only $16. Climbed Diamond head and drove up east coast. Ate lunch at a local mom and pop shop (only 5 tables) for authentic Hawaiian food.

The most beautiful island. Best seen from the air to appreciate. Saw more waterfalls than I can count from the helicopter. Go early as the waterfalls will dry up as the day goes on.

Rented a car and met a friend who lives north of Kona. He guided us up to Waipi'o Valley at the north side of the island. Ate lunch at a locally owned restaurant that gets all its food from local farmers.

All of the ports are in industrial areas so be prepared for less than picturesque views if you are on the wrong side of the boat. We enjoyed walking along the beach close to the port and was able to see turtles near the electric plant...they like the warm drainage water.
