Southern Caribbean on the Victory

Sail Date: April 2011
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

We are veteran cruisers and looked forward to cruising the southern caribbean ports ,places we have never seen.

The ship:the layout is similar to all Carnival ships, food quality to amenities. What subtle changes we noticed were the longer wait times in the food lines and less wait staff to clean up the myriad of food plates left behind on the Lido.Inconsistent service in the dining room ,food was served without the accompanyments ( ice tea ,without sugar) Requests were met slowly and inefficiently. I dont usually complain and take things in stride but after the first day it seemed to get worse. When the maitre d rounded and asked how the service was, I told her I felt it was inconsistent and gave her examples. She said she would personally make sure that we were taken care of and appreciated the constructive critcism .I think there are less wait staff in all. I wouldnt say it got better, some days were better than others and perhaps it was because we chose "your time dining" More instead of fixed seating. The cleanliness was ok, not superior as in years past (dust visible on rails in dining room ,soiled bathrooms ,no soap in suites, food left behind on tables ,tray lines ,sticky tables ,etc)

The rooms were ok ,the beds are hard. Standard fare.

Drinks expensive ,entertainment fair. Comedy club , new addition and was better than the stale shows.

Embarkation slower than other ports ,debarkation ,quicker than some other ports.

Hot tubs were clogged with kids that used it for swimming ( apparently they were orphans because we rarely saw a parent to discipline them)

No problem getting chairs ,not too many chair hogs. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Barbados: Cab ( $40 R/T for 4) to paynes Beach. Waited for the catamaran to come and swam out to meet them and swam with the turtles for free. Awesome! Bring your own snorkle gear!. Beware of people trying to sell you things on the beach but they do negotiate.

The ports were lovely except SanJuan. Its dirty and unattractive. We were going to do the Segway tour but decided against it because the area is not as it was pictured in the Segway tour web site. Stay on the ship and explore!

St Kitts: the lovliest of the islands:GO WITH Thenford Grey tours. You hear alot about him. He is great ,personable and you will see so much in 1 day. We saw the Batik and gardens, Brimstone Fortress, city tour ,beach time and saw monkeys and weasels at the beach. It was so much fun. The beach is beautiful.

St Lucia: I would recommend taking a tour of any kind to get the most out of the day. We hadnt planned anything, hopped off the boat and grabbed a land/sea tour for $260 -4 people to see all of the island by boat, went into Soufierre and up to the Pitons. Went to the volcano, mud bath ,waterfall and black sand beach. Beware ,they come right up to the boat to sell you dope. Careful!

St Martin: walked off the pier toward town. There is a warning posted regarding the taxi drivers. There is a problem with rogue ,gypsy drivers convincing travelers to go with them and taken off path and robbed. We were almost scammed by one untl an official taxi driver saved us. She took us to Maho beach to see the planes fly overhead, yes they really do. She drove use up to Orient beach and recommended a bar that charged 16 for 2 chairs and an umbrella and 2 drinks. Many are 1.5 to 1 Euro. This was 1:1 . The beach is lovely, but no boundaries anymore between nude/family. Interesting day!

St Thomas: took a cab to Morning Star Resort. A pleasant ,clean ,fuly furnished resort a short cab ride away. ( $50 R/T for 4 )
