Cabin: Balcony

We took our first cruise (well second if you count a very rustic Windjammer 25 years ago) and we were very pleased with the cruise and crew but were a bit put off on a few things and some of our fellow cruisers' behavior. We had a balcony cabin on the starboard Lido deck which proved to be very convenient. The cabin was nicely appointed with lots of storage space, nice bedding, and a great private balcony. Our cabin steward, Richard, was very attentive and learned our names very quickly. He kept very good care of our room and us. The Destiny was very full for a Easter week cruise. There were many kids and teens present. Our destinations were Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Grand Cayman. The food was nice and plentiful, but not fantastic. We chose late dining and were seated at a table for four. Our dining partners were not very talkative but they didn't show the last two nights so that was o.k. Our waitress Lydia, was fantastic. She was a very experienced server and made great suggestions. She was continually focused on making sure we liked our entree and we felt that we were disappointing her if we didn't clean our plates ;-). The vegetables served with dinner were consistently great. But some of the entrees were over cooked or tough. The first three days we ate in the Lido deck cafeteria-style restaurants. The food here was good but not great. The last two days we ate breakfast in the dining room and were very pleased with the food there. On both occasions we were sat immediately with other couples and families that were much more talkative and we found that we really enjoyed this aspect of cruising. The Destiny was a bit dated in color scheme and style, but everything appeared to be in working order. There was a rather funky smell in one area of the Lido deck near one food station so we just made sure not to eat there. The ship facilities and lounges were probably fine for people in their 20s and 30s but we didn't really like any of these areas. The sports bar allowed smoking and only had one or two games on and the bar tender was unable to change channels to watch something else. On a night with NHL, NBA and MLB games on half the TVs were tuned to broadcast network sitcoms and reality shows and soccer in Spanish. We would have liked to see more lounges that were smoke free. A more relaxed, romantic dance club would have been very nice. The on-deck activities on the Lido deck were not that impressive (Hairy chest contests, drink mixing contests, etc,). We found them just loud and obnoxious. We spent most of our deck time far aft above the bar. There were very few kids back there and a little more quiet. We bought an unlimited soda card and were very unsatisfied with this program. We found that asking for a soda resulted in a huge helping of ice and about 4 ounces of soda. We wondered why they use cans instead of a fountain drink system to reduce waste and costs. We purchased shore excursions from Carnival. We did the Dolphin swim and Dunn's river falls combo in Jamaica. Th e Dolphin swim was very nice, but Dunn's River Falls are very dangerous. I hurt my ankle and spent the next two days on a cane and had to ice my ankle. While in the medical center I found two other passengers who had hurt themselves as well. One of the nurses said they were trying to get the falls taken off the list of activities. We took advantage of the ships workout facilities and found them to be very adequate in quality and quantity. Of course, like any gym you may have to wait for specific machines at peak times. We did a couples massage which was very expensive (but nice) but they ruined this by coming back after the massage to sell us lotions and oils. We felt a bit pressured to buy these which detracted from the experience. Drink prices were very expensive ($25.00 for a bucket of 4 beers, $7 to $12 for wine and mixed drinks -- including mandatory gratuity). Speaking of gratuities you will be prompted to tip the maitre de on the last night of dining and we also tipped our waiter and room steward despite the fact that they get a cut of the prepaid tips program. We tipped these 3 individuals $20 each.Or biggest gripe was with the behavior of our fellow guests. There were many very rude, pushy, slovenly people on board who cut in line and were inconsiderately loud and obnoxious. I shuddered at what I assumed the waiters and busboys (who are mainly from places like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and other southern Asian countries) must have thought about our culture for filling trays with so much food and letting it go to waste uneaten. We were dismayed that certain guests dressed inappropriately for dinner, pool and other events. We are not exactly snobs or pretentious people. We both come from midwest families and the first college grads in our family, but have earned our station in life through hard work. But within a few hours we realized that Carnival Destiny might not have been the best fit for us. The next time we cruise it will be on a slightly more upscale line. In summary, if you like a loud boisterous party boat, Carnival Destiny is a good selection. If you want something a tad more refined or a quiet romantic atmosphere then I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Noisy in the evening when the party was in swing on Lido deck. Balcony was really private!
