The Fantasia is really a lovely ship and the cleanest we've ever sailed on.
However check your travel plans if you're going. Don't get on the ship at Genoa..all the italians do and its chaos. It took us nearly three hours to get on board. This was after a 2 hour trip from Milan airport. At disembarkation they want you off the ship as quickly as possible. They dropped us at Milan airport at 11am for a 21.35 flight to London ! They advertise a shore excursion which includes a tour of Genoa, for disembarking passengers, which finishes at Milan airport. This they cancelled. The staff on board are unsympathetic and just do not care, to the point of being rude.
There is no information about the ports of call. With RCI you get a run down of the port you're visiting and a map.
The food is definitely not 5 star. It was generally not very hot and the portions were small. On gala nights the buffet restaurant was closed which gave you no other dining option unless you paid for one of the speciality venues.
The entertainment was generally poor. The Pirates show was the best with the Michael Jackson show extremely poor. The shows only last for 30 minutes anyway.
The smoking laws are flouted in most of the bars and our neighbours smoked in their cabin and on the balcony which is forbidden. The staff simply ignore this. The staff generally are very disinterested and seem discouraged from conversation with the passengers.
Tea and coffee are free only at Breakfast and at certain areas of the cafe at lunch, but definitely not at dinner.
The itinerary was great and we chose this cruise as it visited Malta and Sicliy, where we hadn't been.
It could be said that as MSC cruises are generally cheaper you get what you pay for. However we both expected a level of customer service which is very lacking. Msc need to seriously look at other cruise opeartors. I'm afraid their very Italian Experience, is way short of the norm for Italy. The food dispappointed me as we were looking forward to eating Italian, which is the best food in Europe.
