Princess Sapphire-Hawaii 14 day RT LA

Sail Date: March 2011
Destination: Hawaii
Embarkation: Los Angeles

We had such a great experience with Princess! Our cabin steward was fantastic. Our waiter could not have been better. We did late seating dining room for dinners and absolutely loved our table mates! Cruise was wonderful even though the seas were kind of rough and weather stayed pretty cool. The Hawaii islands were beautiful and we did our own excursions. We looked through what was offered off the boat and used Cruise Critics to verify other people's experiences. We used Ricky's tours in Hilo... really a good experience. We used Alex in Kauai and loved it! In Maui we did the boat with the glass windows.. not too good. Didn't see much and it was pretty hard to see through the glass. It was not clear windows, lots of scratches and really not much to see. The woman that booked the trip for us on the doc complained about the cruise ship passengers "screwing" up their day. She wasn't at all appreciative of the business they brought to her. In Honolulu we took a city bus to More the beach and then did some shopping. Really nice day. $2.00 for the bus ride and the drivers were wonderful about letting us know where to get off and what bus to take to get back to the port. A really inexpensive day.

We enjoyed the days a sea very much. I brought several books and honestly did not even get to crack one of them open. We took lots of walks on the deck and really enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I think this was the best of our 6 cruises and can't wait to go back and do Hawaii again! Thank you so much, Princess!! Less

Port and Shore Excursions

We just walked off the boat and boarded a $3.00 (RT) bus to take us downtown to do some walking and looking. They tried to sell us trips to the Bufadora and were much cheaper than the trip booked on board the boat. We didn't go there, just did the downtown shops (there were many!) had a taco and beer and headed back to the ship on the bus. Nice couple of hours without lots of expense

Loved this port. Used Ricky's tours to see all that was available. It was a small van, personal tour. He was wonderful about explaining culture differences and letting our group of 11 spend as much time as we needed at each stop. Loved Ricky!

Did this port on our own. Took a city bus to the beach and did some shopping at a large mall that was on the bus route. This was very inexpensive.. $2.00 for busfare and the beach was so accessible. Had lunch at a Subway and really didn't feel like we had missed much of this large city.

Loved our tour guide with Alex Tours. Alex was at the port that we visited prior to Kauai (Honolulu) and was taking reservations for the next day. We had one of his women tour guides on our trip around Kauai and she was so funny and wonderful to us. This trip was a larger bus but not huge. About 25 people and the guide had such a good grasp of local culture. She was local and shared so many wonderful stories about the area.

We did one of the glass bottom boat excursions at the port. We booked it this when we ported and it was ok. The woman booking the trip wasn't fond of the tourist from the cruise ships and had no problem expressing how much they messed up her day. Kind of set us off wrong.

There was a wonderful art sale going on in the park across from the port. This happens the first Sunday of every month. Loved buying local art from these folks. Lunch at Burger King was perfect for some junk after all the rich meals we had on the ship.
