We just returned from our March 27th cruise on VOS with Royal Caribbean. Overall, we had a great time. Here are some details about our experience:Embarkation: We waited about an hour and a half to get checked in and get on the ship. :( We went through security, then to the check-in desk. Suite customers get somewhat special treatment in that there is a special line for them. We were given a boarding number, then the waiting began. The communication was horrible - we knew the current number being called only by asking staff members, who really were unsure themselves. An LCD panel mounted high on the wall with numbers would be a great addition. In defense of RCCL, we found out later that there was some sort of emergency just outside the terminal that required EMS and stopped boarding for about 30 minutes. RCCL also handed out waters and juiceboxes while we waited because they could see people were not happy. That was the worst of our trip...Stateroom 7692: We had a Jr. Suite with balcony at the aft of the ship. The balcony was large, with 5 chairs (3 upright and 2 pool-style). The balcony does not look directly over the water, it looks over a deck at the aft (nobody goes there, so it is quiet and empty). In fact, the room was very quiet every night (we have kids and went to sleep by 10pm each night). Furniture could use a facelift - it was showing some wear. The fridge was not real cold - large bottles of water cost $3.95. The room had ample storage - 3 very short top drawers, 6 standard depth drawers, a wardrobe closet with 5 shelves, walk-in closet with wire shelves and hangars, desk with a safe and cupboard area to the right, vanity with opening mirror areas and lower cupboard beneath the TV. Our Room Steward was Britto. He was shy but wonderful. As is typical, we had towel animals every day, including stingray, monkey, turtle (our favorite), a bat, etc.Food: We cruised with Carnival last spring and felt that Royal's food was comparable. Prime Rib the first night in the Windjammer was terrific!! Breakfast in the Windjammer was the same each day - scrambled eggs, hash browns, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, fruit. Selections in the main dining room were fairly limited, but quality was good. We would give the food 4 stars. The seafood brochette I had on the 1st formal night was great. Lobster on 2nd formal night was good. The mushroom in puff pastry also great. Ports/Excursions: In Cozumel, we opted for the Passion Island Excursion through RCCL. It was WONDERFUL!! We found the area with the Passion Island sign, waited about 15 minutes, then boarded a non-sail catamaran which took us to Passion Island. It took about 30 minutes. Our guide was Alejandro...very friendly and funny. Since we had a 5 yo and 9yo, the beach was perfect for us. There were 3 water trampolines, blue float mats, kayaks all included. Also included a buffet lunch (rice, chicken, fish, pico-de-gallo, chips, guacamole, fruit such as pineapple and papaya, cucumber salad, tomatoes, etc.) The pico and guacamole were great!!In Grand Cayman, we decided to "wing it". We ended up taking a tour to Singray City for $25pp with Carson Tours. We went across the street from the pier and they were there. Most offered tours for $40pp-ish and RCCL was much more - I think $75pp. The tour was good. A gal came aboard and took photos and sold CD's (a little pricey at $60) but optional. We did not buy one, just took our own pictures. Just a word of caution - if you go with kids, be sure that they know NOT to place their hands under the eyes of the ray - the suction is unbelievable and my 9yo ended up with a "Stingray Kiss" on her hand, which scared her half to death and ended up with her on the boat, not wanting to be in the water. :( When we returned, we went to Margaritaville for a drink and munchies. It was expensive at $70 for wings, kid pizza and 2 drinks. In Jamaica, we booked Reggae Tours before leaving home. Highly recommend!! We paid $20pp round trip from Falmouth to Montego Bay. Patrick was our driver - he was on the quiet side, but needed to concentrate! Driving in Jamaica in an adventure! We went to Cornwall Beach. The cost was $5 admission, and they charge $5 each for umbrella and beach chairs. There is a small restaurant that serves "pub-style food" such as burgers, fish and chicken nuggets. Definitely try the Jamaican "festival". It was tasty - a bit like fried dough, but more dense. Cornwall beach has games, such as hula hoop ring toss and others. There is also hair braiding for $3 each or whole head for $25, jewelry and souvenir tables and small shop. The vendors left you alone on the beach, but did coax you over when you walked by. Definitely negotiate with them. We bought a wooden carved turtle for $5 (they wanted $10). This is the same beach where RCCL's "Irie-Mon Beach Break" visits and paid 3X the price! They were all crammed into half of the beach, chairs nearly touching one another. The independent folks (us and 2 other couples) had the rest of the beach. Ask for Marvin if you go - he waited on us while we were enjoying the beach and is a great guy! I highly recommend you go with Reggae and save yourself some money. The other tourist beach nearby is Doctor's Cave. There were more restaurants within walking distance and we'd probably try that next time around.Ship Entertainment: DO NOT miss the ice skating shows! They were terrific! Also entertaining was the Elvis look-alike (Travis ?) He was funny and sounded alot like the original. Worth seeing. The Island Frency Parade was great also - interesting costumes and fun music. We loved the Scoreboard bartender from Mauritius. Overall, the staff was very friendly and helpful!Disembarkation: We received numbered luggage tags the afternoon before disembarking. Each number had a designated meeting area for the next morning. Ours was La Scala Theatre. We arrived and sat, watching TV on their big screen for about 20 minutes until our time arrived (we were in the 9:30 group). We left the ship around 9:50, found our luggage (sorted by tag number), went through customs and caught the shuttle back to Lighthouse Parking. We were at our car by 10:30 and on the way home! Terrific process for disembarkation. Parking: We parked with Lighthouse - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! They were professional, friendly, helpful and we did not wait for a shuttle more than 10 mins. coming or going. The cost was $50, covered.
