Having just completed a week on the Gem, here is my experience and review of the trip. The total experience was wonderful.Upon walking up to the port at the New York passenger terminal, we were ushered to a special counter and checked in after a very short wait, then escorted to a VIP reception area, where we were given our keycards and after another short wait, escorted in a small group onto the ship, through a special private gangway, and brought up to Cagney's Steakhouse for lunch...the cabins were not ready for passengers yet. Lunch at Cagney's was great..the jumbo shrimp were excellent and I had to return there nearly everyday for lunch, just to have that shrimp...After lunch we still had time and went and checked out the 14th floor "Courtyard Villa" pool and lounge area, all very pretty and relaxing, for now, that would all change later unfortunately. While leaving this restricted area,up the stairs herd this massive amount of people, all young families with many many small screaming preschoolers and toddlers. They would, in mass, take over this serene area for most of the voyage, and turned this area into a daycare center, the pool becoming the offical KiddiePool, with loud splashing kids running about all the time...not very restful at all...great if you had children with you, but otherwise you did not want to spend any time there, and we fled the area..so much for paying extra for the "Villa Experience. But descendind down to deck 10, we walked in the Owner's Suite cabin 10004.What a beautiful room,,so perfect and with all the doors to both decks open,I felt like I was at a summer cottage, with the breeze blowing through. We had nice weather, till the very last day,so it was a pleasure to keep the doors open. The front balcony was not very windy at all, even at sea,,,surprised by that,it was nice looking out at the hull cutting through the sea.The side balcony was the perfect spot to sail by Lady Liberty and we,along with friends who joined us , took excellent photos. The decks were so relaxing, that I did not want to ever return to that Villa Courtyard. The side deck was a double length deck so it never felt cramped.Upon entering the cabin, you walk into a hallway with stainglass lighting overhead and small bathroom to your right, then into the livingroom with double glass sliding doors that lookout over the side deck. There is diningroom, not a table placed in the livingroom,,but a diningroom with three walls enclosing that area..very nice size for a vessel..across from the diningroom was a bar, which they stocked. The bedroom was off the livingroom and it was a small tight space with glass window and door to the forward deck. The bathroom and changing room were off the bedroom. The bathroom was beautiful with 2 windows in it.One looks out over the sea and another towards your side balcony.Tub, shower and 2 sinks make this a great bathroom. The changing room was where we stored the luggage and hung up the clothes. The front door to the forward deck was hard to open and close and the 2 ladies next door had to call their butler to close it at 1 in the morning. They couldn't manage it, and I could see why.It is heavy. The pools were crowded, the special "al la carte" diningrooms were excellent and worth the extra fee.Cargney's for breakfast and lunch is a nice perk, as it never was crowded there at all.The ports were fun,but too short a time in Florida to fully enjoy DisneyWorld.Didnt go to any shows,,,seemed to busy to fit it in.The butler brought coffee to the cabin every morning,I requested 7:30 and he was there on time everyday, right at 7:30, not 7:25, not 7:35...but always right at 7:30.His name was Roy and he was special. He kept us stocked with mixers for the bar.Leaving the ship was easy,,,we ate breakfast at Cagney's and walked off the ship at 9:30 am with no one ahead of us.Small line at Customs and then we awaited our driver and was brought back to the real world and cold temps!
