WONDERFUL

Sail Date: February 2011
Destination: Canada & New England
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

We left out of Port Ft. Lauderdale. We arrived at about 11 a.m. There were no lines or waiting. We signed in and were on the ship in about 30 min. or less. This was definitely the easiest, swiftest embarkation to date for us. We had cabin 7108. It was close to the elevators by the centrum and access to all other areas was fantastic. Our cabin was a non smoking balcony at the end of several smoking balconies, however. And cigarette smoke from next door was unpleasant and even came into the cabin if the door was open to the balcony.

Sea days were fun filled, lots of activities. Rough seas on 1 day and sick bags were present. Pool areas are well laid out. We didn't see alot of deck chair saving. There were always chairs available.

This ship is beautiful, with a great layout. The food was excellent. We had my time dining. We never had to wait and we received the same table for 2 almost every night. The service was good but not as good as previous experiences in the More formal dining room.

The crew on this ship was the most friendly accommodating group we have ever sailed with! Less

Cabin review: Jewel of the Seas Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom Deck 7 7108

The only complaint I would have would be...We booked a non-smoking room. I am very sensitive to smoke. The cabins adjacent to us were not non-smoking and therefore we were bombarded with cigarette smoke because we had a balcony. I don't think our room should have been in such close proximity to a smoking room. The location was great in accordance with central activity areas and eateries.

Port and Shore Excursions

Second port was Cartagena, Columbia. We took a taxi to the walled city. Lots of beautiful architecture. It was extremely safe. There were police on practically every corner. I would take a Spanish English dictionary. Every written word is in Spanish, unlike some of the other Latin ports we have visited. But that made it more of an unique experience.

We took a tour with My friend Mario. We toured the Panama Canal, rain forest, and the fort. We traveled in a comfortable air conditioned bus. Our tour guide, Ray, was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Soda, beer, water and snacks were provided. The view from the fort was one of the most stunning I have ever seen.

We have been here many times and have already experienced much of what GC has to offer. We walked a short distance to cheeseburger reef to snorkel. The water was incredibly clear and we saw many diff. fish species. There were huge 5 foot tarpon in the fairly shallow water, which was slightly unnerving at first. Chris and I both got stung by jelly fish here. A first and painful experience for us both. We returned to the ship and got cleaned up and ate lunch. We then did some shopping. Prices here are not cheap. I would recommend buying trinkets and such in other ports.

Loved, loved, loved Costa Rica! We took a tour with JJ. After meeting with him, we took a van with driver(no English)and a tour guide, Edmon. We took the tour with a great couple, Mary and Bert. We stopped at a local fruit stand and sampled native fruits. The trip to the jaguar rescue was pretty long and the road was very rough at times, but not too bad. We took a tour of the rescue center and got to hold baby howler monkeys. The tiny coastal towns we went through were so quaint and laid back. We stopped for lunch at Elana's in Puerto Viejo for a lunch of Caribbean food. Elena and her family were very gracious and the food was amazing! SInce we had a small group, we were able to decide what to do for the rest of the day. We then went to a national park. The trail along the beach meandered through the forest were we spotted sloths, howler monkeys, iguana, and capuchin monkeys. We swam in the the beautiful waters for a while before, with regret, making the trip back to civilization. We stopped at a local supermarket to buy some local coffee and then returned to the ship. We would love to go back to Costa Rica and explore its treasures.
