Thinking about taking a Celebrity cruise...THINK AGAIN! My husband and I did plenty of research when planning our honeymoon. We specifically chose a Celebrity cruise (11 night ultimate caribbean cruise aboard the Equinox) because we had found from our research that Celebrity is focused on customer service and of a higher quality when it comes to the ship and experience aboard. We unfortunately discovered that the reputation Celebrity has is not warranted.

I will start with the positives, since they were few and far between. The ports of call offered on our specific sailing were simply magnificient...and thankfully so, because this was the saving grace of our honeymoon. We were fortunate enough to visit Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Colon, Panama; Cartegena, Columbia; and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. In addition to the ports of call, the ship itself is quite beautiful. Finally, our stateroom attendant, Servio, was exceptional and catered to our every need.

NEGATIVES: when advised that a couple is celebrating their honeymoon, they should be offered something special (examples: a free room upgrade, free dinner at specialy restaurant, rose petals on bed etc.). NOTHING was provided by Celebrity to enhance our honeymoon experience. Even WestJet gave us a $20 voucher for food and did not charge us for our extra luggage simply because it was our honeymoon. The food included in the cost of the cruise was of a lower caliber and certainly not what we had expected of Celebrity. We have sailed on a Carnival ship in the past and certainly did not anticipate that their food would hail in comparison to that aboard the Equinox. More than simply lower caliber, the selection did not vary from day to day and we often found ourselves eating exactly the same meals over and over again. In order to have a good meal, we had to pay extra to eat at one of their "specialty restaurants". The overall customer service was definitely THE WORST part of our experience. Our first example of their poor customer service involved an off-color comment made by one of the crew members. We reported the incident to guest relations, who were only concerned about identifying the crew member so that they could reprimand him. No one attempted to do anything for us to improve our honeymoon experience, which was tainted by the rude comment of their staff member. When we complained enough we were eventually asked what we wanted them to do to fix the situation, which only made us feel petty and worse. In the end, the guest relations manager (Marcella) offered my husband and I a HALF body massage each, claiming that a couple's massage (an excellent honeymoon experience, which would have made us feel better about the whole situation) was not possible. We never took advantage of our free half body massages because we were frankly insulted by this measly offer. The assistant manager of guest relations (Mario), who had been rude to my husband when he first spoke to him, offered to have a bottle of our favorite wine delivered to our room to excuse his initial reaction to our complaint. Needless to say, the bottle of wine never was delivered. Another noteworthy example was that we were advised by the shore excursions manager that the benefit of booking excursions with the cruise line was that they were "guaranteed". We certainly did not want to miss zip lining in the Costa Rican rainforest and decided to go with her advice and book with Celebrity. We purchased the DVD at the end of the excursion, so that we would have the pictures as a lifelong memory. Upon returning aboard we put the DVD into our laptop only to discover that it did not work. We immediately reported this to the cruise so that we could retrieve another copy from the tour prior to our departure from Costa Rica. Despite the fact that the location was only a 20 minute drive from the port, and there was plenty of time to retrieve the copy, we were told that this was impossible, but that a copy would be mailed to our home...we'll see...
