Like many we flew out from East Midlands Airport with apprehension due to the mixed reviews received of the Thomson Dream - how wrong we were.

1st class entertainment every night (Steven Guy and his team deserve all the plaudits. Dancing & Singing in the Broadway Theatre, and late night deck parties which our teenagers thoroughly enjoyed.

Food was also excellent, particularly in the Orion where we had a great waiter each night called Kreuger. He often offered 2 helpings per course or extra ice cream etc. Similarly, our housekeeper Mary couldn't be faulted. The mainly Filipino crew were generally very courteous & friendly.

The ship itself still needs some work doing on it - listing on the Atlantic coast of Cuba (where time was lost and caused Dominican Republic to be missed) and engine failure a little later when it looked like we may miss Tortola too but this time was recovered.

Otherwise, the cabin was fine & spacious, everywhere was very clean and only picked up a sulphur-like smell on 1 evening.

Would definitely try another cruise, maybe this time in the Med. The dream has an excellent team which I hope it manages to keep together.

Port and Shore Excursions

Annoying vendors on the high street. Some decent duty free shops at Heritage Quay. We took an island tour with Sunshine Island Beach Tours (pre-booked via the internet) - got a feel for the whole island - cricket grounds, run-down villages, the rain forest and Darkwood Beach.

Fabulous beaches at Eagle & Palm just a cheap bus trip away from the docks. good shopping opportunities and eateries also close by.

A fair walk from town but you do pass the Pelican Craft Village and can follow the promenade. Also close by via taxi was the Mount Gay Rum visitor centre with plenty of samples on offer.

Busy & congested town at Roseau with not much to do. We took the Thomson trip inland to the Trafalgar Falls & the Emerald Falls in the rain forest. Very pretty but a long drive on windy roads.

We found the vendors to be quite aggressive here and it is quite a poor country. Nice scenic harbour though, and good viewpoints at Fort George & Fort Frederick.

Interesting colonial buildings and old cars. Some annoyances in the old squares with people dressing up in local costume or with cigars for tipped photos but generally very friendly.

Not sure about the town itself (of which we had heard conflicting reports of the vendors there) but we took the Thomson trip - a catamaran sail and snorkel. A great reef exists just off the coast for snorkeling, and then Doctor's Cave Beach was superb - everything you would want from a beach and probably the best on our itinerary. We didn't look forward to our short stop in Jamaica but it was great and the locals we met were all very friendly.
Market stalls near the docks and a quaint Main street but not much else to do. We took the Thomson trip by catamaran to Virgin Gorda to walk the caves and beaches at The Baths, which were excellent.
