11 Night Caribbean and Panama Cruise

Sail Date: February 2011
Destination: Panama Canal & Central America
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

We boarded the ship on Feb. 14, 2011 and set sail from Ft. Lauderdale. The check-in process was quick and painless. Once on board the fabulous Jewel of the Seas, we proceeded to the buffet where there were plenty of food options. Apparently, we weren't the only ones with this idea, so seating was limited. After lunch, we checked out our suite which was well appointed. We quickly changed into our bathing suits and headed off to the pool. We were disappointed to find that on Radiance class ships, they don't reserve deck chairs for those of us traveling at the concierge level, the way they do on Voyager class ships.

The rest of the trip was enjoyable. We made lots of new friends, some fellow cruisers and even some crew. My main dining room waiter taught me to speak some Hindi. We fell in love with the Chops Grille specialty restaurant.

We purchased the photo package for $349 which gave us all prints plus 10 hi-res images on CD. It seems expensive, but we will have More these memories for a lifetime.

All in all, a lovely cruise! Less

Cabin review: Jewel of the Seas Grand Suite Deck 10 1552

Everything was as we expected. Great cabin location, no outside noise. Well maintained.

Port and Shore Excursions

First stop was Aruba -- we got off the ship and took a taxi to Eagle Beach ($8) where we rented Jet Skis -- what a blast!

Next stop Cartegena, Columbia -- We did an excursion that took us on an ecological tour through the mangroves and surrounding swamp (kinda boring), and then we wound up at a local hotel on the beach to enjoy their facilities for an hour (best part of the excursion).

Colon, Panama -- We took an excursion that traversed the Panama Canal -- we wound up on the Pacific side and then took a bus back to our ship. The experience was long and boring.

Georgetown, Grand Cayman -- Swimming with the Dolphins -- it was cool, but I expected to get a little more time with the dolphin -- we were moved along in an assembly line fashion -- left me wanting more.

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica -- Ariel tram and zip-line through the rain forest -- this is a must do for everyone who visits Costa Rica!
