Sail Date: Feb 2011

My husband and I and another couple were on the Noordam last month for 10 days in the Caribbean. It was both couples second time on this ship. We have sailed 4 previous times on HAL and my husband and I sailed on the Noordam the summer of 2009 for 20 days in the Mediterranean and had a wonderful time. This experience was quite different.

When the 4 of us booked the cruise last fall the ship was almost sold out. There were no balcony rooms left. We took the 2 remaining rooms on the Main deck, rooms 1107 and 1109. Our room, 1009, had no hot water the first evening or the next morning. I went to the main desk that morning to report the problem. By late afternoon when we returned to the room there was still no hot water. I reported it to our cabin attendant who immediately contacted someone to take care of it. When we returned from dinner that evening the hot water was working. However, when I attempted to shower the 2nd morning I couldn't get the water to a warm temperature - it was just scalding hot. Again I went to the main desk to report the problem. Nothing was done again. Finally my husband was able to fix the problem with brute strength to get the new temperature part to turn properly. I would not have been able to do this myself.

The more serious problem began in our friend's room the first evening. There were odors coming into the cabin which kept her up most of the night. By the second night this problem was in our cabin as well. It was a fowl smell and quite nauseating. Again I went to the main desk to complain and I was really given the third degree - what time did it start, why didn't I call right way, etc. Not only was the main desk person rude but obviously stupid. Is there a clock provided in the room to know what time it is in the dark? Should I turn on the lights and wake up my husband if he were sleeping? She said she would look into it. Same problem the next night in both rooms. Our friend went to talk to the food services manager who got on it right away. By the third night the problem seemed resolved.

Cabin Review

Noordam Room 1109: smelly, above staff kitchen and adjacent to crew space which was also very smelly when the door was open which was frequent. This room is not acceptable. This is a standard room on the Noordam and is the same on all levels, including rooms with balconies. The hallway where the closets are is across from the bathroom and very narrow. It is impossible to open the closet doors and walk to the bathroom or out of the cabin. There is a small seating area. Also a desk without drawers which is poorly lit overhead. This is where the makeup mirror is and therefore it is not very useful. A small outdated TV is above the desk.
