Sail Date: Dec 2004

Dorothy, my wife, and I had planned this cruise well in advance (June) of our 25th Wedding Anniversary which would be celebrated on December 15, 2004. We researched available cruises for that date and perused reviews from Cruise Critic. First, I want to say thanks to all those who posted on this cruise over the past year. This is our second cruise but the first with Carnival.

The trip began on embarkation day for my wife, son (age 18) and me from Evansville, IN. My daughter (age 22) flew into New Orleans from Dallas. In retrospect, we should have gone in on Saturday to enjoy N'awlins. We all arrived at Louis Armstrong International at about 11:00. The kids had never experienced a limousine so I had pre-arranged pick-up by Extreme Elegance Limo Service. I had told them a shuttle van was picking us up. The look on their faces when the limo pulled up instead was priceless. The rate of $40.00 was comparable to taxi service and actually cheaper than bus transfers so it was a good value for four people.

EMBARKATION: We arrived at the cruise terminal around noon. I had read about the hassles regarding the construction in the area and to my surprise, the flow was very good. We only spent about 15 minutes in the terminal check-in line and then... uh oh... 15 minutes at the counter. Three of the four "Sail and Sign" cards were missing! My son was the only person that had a card ready. We were advised that once we got on the ship, the purser's office would take care of the problem and issue the keys. I'm already thinking about lunch and I have to go stand in another line? Grrrrrrr. Twenty-five minutes (most purser agents were at lunch! Grrr) in that line and we find out their computer system was down and would have to come back for our keys. We go to lunch in Restaurant Cezanne (Deck 9) and have a wonderful meal. Folks... do NOT miss the gourmet pizza on the aft end of the ship! Margherita pizza was one of my favorites. We finish and head back to the purser's desk. ANOTHER twenty minutes in line and still no room keys! They suggest going to the Empress Deck and find our room steward to let us in the room. I'm near fuming at this point! Why could they not contact the steward have him meet us there? Going to stop here and just say we finally got the cards @ 7pm. We wasted about 3 hours on this one issue. It was quite interesting watching this huge ship make a U-turn in the middle of the Mississippi upon departure.
