Dawn Princess - Southern Caribbean

Review for the Southern Caribbean Cruise on Dawn Princess

This, our ninth cruise, but our first with Princess, was booked in April 2004. The only ports of call that we had not previously visited were Guamache and Princess Cays. Four weeks prior to departure we were informed that due to technical operational reasons Dawn Princess would be sailing at a reduced speed between ports, and unfortunately the itinerary would be changed. Visits to Guamache and Princess Cays would be cancelled, plus time at other ports would be shortened. Due to our disappointment, and as a gesture of goodwill Princess offered us $150 per person on board credit. In our view this was a major change and we would have preferred to cancel, but Princess was obdurate and dismissive, and we were unable to cancel or change our cruise. With hindsight, we would have been much happier if we had just not taken this cruise at all.

Organisation on board was dismal. Following a late arrival at Curacao we queued for over one hour to disembark. At St. Thomas, after standing in the mid-day sun for forty-five minutes waiting to join the ferry for our four hour tour of St. John, at first we were told the ferry would be ten minutes late, then it would be a further fifteen minutes late, eventually we were told that the ferry was lost and the tour cancelled, and we could be reimbursed at the Shore Excursion desk.

As usual, we had chosen second sitting for dining. This was a mistake, the first five nights the service was so slow we were too late for the late performance in the theatre. The food was cold, bland and unimaginative. On three evenings we and our fellow diners sent our meals back, they were cold, and the meat could not be cut. We were not alone in our dissatisfaction regarding the dining.
