My partner and I took the Gem on its November 27, 2010 cruise out of NYC. It was our first time on Norwegian and we had a great time.
Embarkation
We got to the pier around 10:00 am. We were able to go inside right away, but did have to wait for a little bit before the registration process began. After the registration opened, the lines moved fast. We then had to wait to board the ship while the passengers from the week before finished disembarking. We were on board by around 12:00 p.m. We headed to the Grand Pacific at the rear of the ship for lunch. Around 2:00 pm we were allowed to go to our cabin. Our luggage arrived shortly after we got to the cabin.
When we initially booked the cruise we had booked an obstructed view cabin. We called a couple of weeks before the cruise and upgraded to a guaranteed balcony. A few days before the cruise we learned that we were in Cabin 8634, which is a great cabin, facing out the rear of the ship. It was nice sitting out on our balcony each morning. As we were at the back of the ship, there was no wind on the balcony. On the warmer nights we left the door open a little. The sounds from the ship propulsion were like being by a waterfall. The Bliss Lounge is located right below this cabin. You could here some noise coming from there, but we hardly noticed it. Maybe this would be an issue for a light and/or early to bed sleeper? Also, we are in our 30s and would stay up late most nights anyway. A couple of nights were spent at Bliss. :)
