This was our 5th cruise, 2nd on carnival. We are in our late-40's.
We traveled to New Orleans the day before by Amtrak from Memphis. This was our first train experience. The trip down was relaxing taking 8 hours. We arrived in New Orleans around 3 took a taxi to Hampton convention center, checked in, then headed for the French Quarter, eating at Jimmy Buffets.
When we woke the next morning it was a brisk 37, ate breakfast at the hotel and took the free 10:30 shuttle to the pier. We had our sign and sail cards by 11:00. We were given our zone number and waited with the several hundred or so people who were already there. Carnival started calling zones to board at 11:30, our zone was called at 11:45, we stepped on board at 11:50 were sitting by the aft pool having pizza at noon.
We felt the Triumph was clean and in good shape, considering its age. The staff, contrary to other reviews, were energetic and smiling. We met our room steward only once, but the room was always clean. A different towel animal and mints every night. Our mdr staff was excellent, thank you Maledin and Sanjin, both from Croatia.
As stated in other reviews the cabins do not have heat, control the temp by opening or closing AC vent. The first evening and first day at sea our cabin stayed between 66-69. Once in Mexico the weather was perfect.
The port of Progresso doesn't have much "curb appeal", but the people were very friendly. We did the Corona beach party, and had a blast.
This was our first visit to Cozumel. We have never seen such beautiful water anywhere in the Caribbean. We took a taxi downtown, the cost was very reasonable. We went shopping and contrary to other reviews the shop owners and staff were not pushy, but rather friendly and helpful.
We went to the main show lounge three evenings and the shows were very good. We went to the comedy club one evening. The first comedian, was quite frankly, not good. The second, was much better.
Debarkation was smooth. We were in no hurry; train didn't leave until 1:30. We sat by the pool watching the big TV until our zone was called.
A quick note for new cruisers. Remember to bring cash for tipping. There are baggage porters, taxi drivers, tour drivers and tour guides. We also like to tip our mdr wait staff and room steward extra to show our appreciation.
We hope to cruise again soon with Carnival.
