Based on many of the cruise critic reviews, our expectations for the EPIC was fairly low. In a few areas, the ship excelled while a few others not so much.
The EPIC is the entertainment ship. From Cirque Dream to the Blue Man Group and everything in between was quite good. Not cheap in some cases but, quite good. Cirque Dream was worth the $60 cost if you get very good seats. The food was better than expected. The entertainers in Cirque Dream are quite something and it is amazing what they can do on a moving cruise ship.
Blue Man Group was ok - wife really liked it while I did not really get it. Worth going to as it is free.
Howl at the Moon group was also good. Went twice and enjoyed their antics.
Fat Cats Blues room had Roadside Louie and the Dusters. If they are still on the ship they should be a must see.
Bernie Martini ( his real name ) in the Martini bar most nights playing a piano and singing Sinatra, Billy Joel, Elton John etc. was terrific. Wife wanted to adopt him and take him home. Unfortunately, this was his last cruise on the EPIC and will be off for a couple of months and then joins the NCL Jade.
Second City group was also good but there were some areas that they were not as funny as you might expect. Worth seeing for sure.
The only venue that is borderline in my opinion is the Murder Mystery lunch and show. Second City group does this and it was only ok in my opinion.
Food overall was quite good in our view. The specialty restaurants were quite good. Ate at Le Bistro, La Cucina, Sushi Bar, Noodle Bar and the Chinese restaurant, Shanghi. Best was the Sushi Bar. Great presentation and it also included Yakitori which is hard to find in the U.S. Price was right as well with total cost for two about $15 which does not include alcohol.
Also went to O'Sheehan's several times as it was convenient. Breakfast not so good but sandwiches and brownie & ice cream desert was quite good.
Never ate at the Garden Cafe/Great Outdoors which is their cafeteria restaurant. It was better looking than most I have seen and the tables in the Garden Cafe have the best view of the water of any of the restaurants except La Cucina. Just don't like cafeteria style eating.
Tip: Check the daily activity bulletin for notices of half price Martini's in the Moderno Bar. A wonderful environment and there are a few tables that overlook the Manhattan Room and the large window area at the aft end of the ship. This happy hour offering was available 4-5 nights during the cruise and is the only reasonable bar for drinks if you get there for the special.
The EPIC is a good looking ship. Nice colors etc. Most things others have pointed out are correct regarding smoke in the Casino and having to walk through it if you are going on deck 6. Mid-ship access from the upper decks is needed and forces you to walk further than you might like.
Cabin was the biggest disappointment. Many many reviews have already covered the problem areas and I can only say that it is the smallest feeling balcony cabin we have been on and the wash basin is just about as bad as everyone has said it is. An RV curtain separates the shower and toilet from the rest of the cabin. The curtain certainly does not allow for much privacy and sounds and smells readily filter into the main cabin area.
This was not a show stopper for us but, the cabin experience does not enhance the overall cruise experience.
One last note: We found the overall crew attitude and courtesy to be excellent. Always smiling and very helpful with only a couple of exceptions.
