Our fears were groundless. The EPIC is a beautiful ship with a very friendly crew. We saw reviews stating that the crew was "rude". We have found in our travels that if you treat staff and natives with respect, you will get the same treatment in return. We feel that the EPIC's staff is first rate.
The food in the "pay" dining areas that we sampled were excellent. We dined in Moderno, Cagney's and the French restaurant "Le Bistro".
We liked the service in "Taste" for "no extra cost" dining better than the hustle bustle of the larger Manhattan room. The menus are the same in both dining rooms. The menu items on the right side of the menu are the same every day, with the left side being different. Don't expect the steaks in the "no extra cost" dining rooms to be anywhere close in quality to the one you will get in Cagney's. We highly recommend the "pay' dining rooms to enhance your cruise experience.
If you book the Spiegel Tent for Cirque Dreams and Dinner, I do not feel that you need to pay the $10.00 up charge for "premium" seats. The tent area is small and if you get in line early for the "regular" seats, you will have a great view of the show.
Legends in Concert and Second City were very good. We are not huge fans of the Blue Man Group, as we had seen them in Las Vegas earlier. This is a show that you will either love or hate....
In Roatan we pre-booked on the web with Victor Bodden tours. On Costa Mayan we pre-booked on the web with Native Choice tours. Both were excellent tours at a much lower price that a tour of that caliber would have been if we had booked through the ship.
Our balcony stateroom was very nice. They are long and narrow, but there is plenty of storage available.
We really like the Freestyle cruising concept. Other lines are adopting some of the free style concepts.
We did not go to the Ice Bar, as we felt the two drink minimum charge was outrageous to see it.
Our only minor complaint was that the cruise Director, Paul, was obnoxious toward guests. We saw two examples of this, one of which he directed at a young child. He tries to be funny, but it's way overdone.
All in all, the cruise was great and we do recommend the EPIC.
We are all seasoned travelers, and have booked many tours sold through various cruise ships.
The "Best of Roatan" tour that we scheduled online with Victor Bodden was the best ever.
We had a private tour, just he four of us with our tour guide JoAnna. JoAnna is a native of Roatan and she loves her island, and after the tour, so do we. JoAnna is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating and spoke fluent English (which is the "first" language of the island). She told us that the natives speak English very fast to each other, and they speak "slower" with the tourists.
We saw all of the sights, visited the Monkey Farm, visited the beach, went shopping and had a great lunch at a seaside restaurant recommended by JoAnna.
When you book a tour with Bodden Tours, you can go and do anything you want to do on the island.
I highly recommend this tour company, and if you are fortunate enough to have JoAnna be your tour guide, you will be extremely pleased with your day in Roatan.
It was a perfect day and a VERY reasonable price. A tour of this caliber sold through the ship would have been much more expensive.
