Experienced Cruiser Comments

Sail Date: October 2010
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Background: Married, 60's, many cruises on most mass market and premium lines. Healthy, normal weight, active.

Summary: Carnival has clearly developed its product for the lower end of the market and provides excellent service and food for that market and price structure. The clientele and food reflect that market strategy. This particular trip was badly disrupted by a very late arrival of the ship due to medical issues, and decisions made by Carnival to address those issues. This diminished the value of the cruise, and made a very long and painful first day. The official Carnival decision was that it was a Medical problem, and the oncoming passengers should bare the full burden of the associated losses; although, we played no part in the problem or associated decisions. Not even one free drink was offered as compensation during the endless day waiting off in a passenger storage facility miles away. This was pretty much fatal to whole experience. Even if you could overcome it, More no one else could. Putting that issue aside, the following was the best objective evaluation I could make. I was told a class action suite was underway to address the losses.

Cabin: Clean and modern with no issues.

Cabin service: Very good with no issues.

Ship: Modern and clean with a very marginal amount of common space. Very poor layout.

Food: Large portions of high carbohydrate meals. Well prepared for what it was. Good service. Good for the very low price of the cruise.

Entertainment: Fair to good.

Family: Large numbers of young children, many of whom were poorly controlled.

Ports of Call: Well managed stops except they always let the disabled off and on first which greatly slowed the whole process wile being of no special value to the disabled on tenders. This was further delayed by photographers stopping everyone on the gangway for pictures no one wanted.

Disembarkment: Probably the best managed part of the cruise.

Clearest memory of the trip: Huge number of massively obese passengers.

Recommendations: Best for cheap family vacation with young kids. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Freedom Balcony Lido 9245

Excellent cabin; although, the balcony is so small that you can just barely get a chair on it, and the swing open door makes 2 chairs a real problem to negotiate. But what do want for the price?

Port and Shore Excursions

This is not a favorite spot for us, so read other reviews. It was not scheduled, but was substituted when weather changed the itinerary.

This is a great stop for those who enjoy a nice day at the beach or enjoying water sports. One of the finest beaches in the world, and I have been to hundreds.

Great spot to visit once. Just explore on your own. It is in the U.S. so it is as safe as most recreation locations.
