Half a century not out!

Sail Date: October 2010
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

We booked this cruise to celebrate my 50th birthday. On checking in we arrived on board and made our way to the poolside area where it was very hectic and loud music was playing - it was the welcome party. We were tired after a long day of travelling and so were a bit jaded - forgive the pun! We were wondering if this was the tone of what was ahead.

Needn't have worried, although breakfast time is busy and you may have to share a table with other passengers, you still have the option of waiter service in the Grand Pacific Restaurant where it is much quieter and you can have your own table.

All in all the boat, staff, accommodation, food and entertainment were top knotch. We had a fantastic holiday and will definitely book again with NCL.

Personally we liked the mix on nationalities on board the ship it added to the experience. Yes the drinks are pricey but they include service charges and they are not that much different to hotel prices in the UK. You will More not find friendlier or more attentive staff. Less

Small but perfectly formed. Good central location. Shower good size

Port and Shore Excursions

We actually docked in Livorno a small Italian town. Which provided a good train link to Pisa we found no problems in getting around on the transport system and would recommed this if you do not want to book official excursions. Locals were helpful and friendly.

Monaco is a real gem, the ship docks literally in the centre, so no need for any transport to sample the delights. Even though it rained most of the time we still appreciated the beauty and splendour of Monte Carlo. Grand Prix circuit, casino, Hotel du Paris, palace all within easy walking distance.

Be beware of taxi drivers, gypsies and trinket sellers, who will try and relieve you of your Euros before you board the hydrofoil to Capri. We travelled independently which wasn't too bad. It all adds to the holiday experience for us. Capri, Sorrento and Pompei are all achieveable in one day at a cost of approx 50 euros per person a real day out.

Lovely weather, lovely port absolutely beautiful. Palma is approximately 40 minutes steady walk from the port. All flat and well paved along side the Marina. Public transport is readily available from the Port. Recommend open top bus tour.

We actually docked at Civitavecchia. We did not go into Rome but chose to have a leisurely day in the town, which is a small former italian seaside resort,it has potential, but is in the process of being regenerated at the moment. If you walk along the promenade there are information boards which inform you about the history of the town, apparently it was the place to be in the 1930's.
