First time cruiser to Hawaii

Sail Date: November 2010
Destination: Hawaii
Embarkation: Los Angeles

This was my first time on a cruise ship. I always wanted to go to Hawaii so I decided to go. I paid for 2 people but I was the only one in my inside cabin because I did not find someone to go with me. My cabin was at the very rear of the ship on deck 12. The motion of the ship at sea was noticeable but not uncomfortable. The weather to and from Hawaii was sunny for the most part.

Movies Under The Stars is a great attraction on the ship. On the Golden Princess the movies is on deck 14, midships. Some other ships have it at the very rear. Also on deck 14 was the Horizon Court buffet so that was nice as well. I did not do any specialty dining but I could have. The food in the buffet was good with a good variety depending on the day. That means everyday was not the same food.

There were a lot of sea days so if you go, be prepared for that. After the ship left Los Angeles, it takes the rest of that day and 4 more to get to Hilo, Hawaii which is the first stop out of 4 More stops. The sport deck is nice, lots of sports to do. The newsletter you get everyday tells you about all the activities so that was helpful.

Inside cabin on deck 12 very near the rear of the ship. The safe in the closet is small but very secure. Good water pressure in the cabin. Lots of hot water available. The bed was okay in comfort but the covers where very good. Pillows where fine and comfortable. Lots of lighting in the room should you like that. The TV was up high, wish it could be lowered. Lots of mirrors in the room, did not care for that too much. Room service available all day everyday. And only 1 level from the Horizon Court 24 hour buffet area. Less

I went on the volcano tour in Hilo and booked that through the Princess company. It was a great tour, went to the nut factory first, then to the volcano observatory which was really great. The best way is to book tours before you go on the cruise. That way when you get to your room, your tour tickets are already there waiting for you.

Next day was Honolulu and the ship docked almost in the middle of downtown, which is nice. Walking distance to everything. I went on the Diamond Head tour. We went by van to the Diamond Head National Park then went to the trail to walk up to the top. It is a very long walk so be sure you can do it on some steep terrain. The view at the top is the best ever. You can see for miles and get very good photos so go on that tour for sure. Going down the trail was easier and the train is well maintained. It is not paved except a little at the start so there are a lot of rocky areas so be aware of that.

This is a great port. I did not go on a Princess tour here but you can. Right next to the ship at the dock there were vans that are free that take you to shopping areas. Take one and have a good time. One goes to Kmart and another goes to Wal Mart. Another goes to the Anchor Mall area.

The ship will drop anchor off shore and take you to the dock in one of the little boats on the side of the ship. The waves can be rough but be sure to visit the island. There is lots of shopping to do and great views of the ship out at anchor. And there is a bus system to visit other parts of the island for only a dollar each way on each bus. There is a museum near the dock that you can visit.
