Explorer of the Seas, Cape Liberty

Sail Date: October 2010
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: Bayonne (Cape Liberty)

We embarked on the Explorer of the Seas 10/28-11/7. First, let me say, Cape Liberty is a nightmare. One entrance admitting 3100+ passengers is CRAZY. Prepare to wait in a long line of traffic and spots at the drop off tent are impossible to find. Once out of the vehicle, the luggage attendants are very efficient and helpful. Disembarking is a bigger nightmare. Cape Liberty needs to revamp the drop off and pick up areas to allow more vehicles and more parking spaces to pull up to.

Explorer of the Seas is a FUN ship. Some areas of the ship could use refurbishing, ie theater seating and cabins need some updating. I hear that is coming soon. The staff is top notch. Sailed twice with Explorer and have never experienced any rudeness with any personnel. They are wonderful!

The food in the Windjammer is OK. Not the best quality: powdered eggs, some stale pastries. The fried egg and omelet station has very long lines. They should add extra personnel at the griddle. People More would rather eat that than the rubbery pancakes, waffles, etc. After a few days, I was eating boxed cereal or a bagel.

Main Dining room is good. Food is a little too salty. Sodium restricted dieters beware!! Service is outstanding!

Elevators are SLOW!! Work off the calories and walk up and down the stairs.

Entertainment was good. Loved the comedians and magicians. The Cruise Director himself was a RIOT...Chris Northey. However, they should eliminate the 70's disco party and move on to something else. I have seen the same party for 4 years now.

The Spa has raised the prices TREMENDOUSLY!! Close to $200 for massages. YIKES!

The DJ in the Chamber SUCKS!! They need a more current DJ who is up to date with the current dance music.

The best hangout spot for after hours is The Cafe Promenade...late night pizza, sandwiches and snacks!! Love sitting in the promenade to people watch!

Beware...Cruises for more than a week tend to have ALOT of Seniors on board. Watch out for those scooters and grumpiness!! LOL!!

I have cruised on RC 6 times and have no desire to switch. I am ready for Oasis and Allure now. I might skip the Freedom line!! Less

Cabin review: Explorer of the Seas Interior Stateroom Deck 6

interior adjoining rooms...small but efficient. Lots of hidden storage and RC make use of every nook and cranny. Room attendants are GREAT!!!

Port and Shore Excursions

Port looks unfinished! Beware when you get into the shopping village. The locals will put monkeys in your hands and on you and then charge you $10+ after you take a pic. They wont tell you that before hand!!! I saw plenty of people getting ripped off that way. The stores all have the same usual tourist crap but each one has different prices making it a chore to find the lowest price. They DONT haggle. They dont seem to care whether or not you buy their mdse.

Excursion on the ship are expensive. At the port you can get great sightseeing excursion at 1/2 the price. Very reliable and safe. The prices get cheaper as the day wears on, too!!

St. Thomas is a beautiful Island. The beaches (Magens Bay) are fantastic. However, if you shop in the tented flea market area in town...they are NASTY!! They will not HAGGLE and are VERY RUDE. I refused to spend ONE dollar on their cheap designer knock offs and they didnt seem to care. I guess they have it good there!!

The island is very safe. Don't fear doing things on your own and at your own pace. The people are very nice (other than those merchants above) and will take you anywhere you want to go. Taxi fares are NOT cheap...beware if you have a large family. It could cost you $200+ for a day at the beach!!
