First Cruise Ever

Sail Date: October 2010
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Athens (Piraeus)

This was our first cruise and we found the Westerdam to be a beautiful ship. Our cabin was very comfortable and we found all of the staff to be very friendly and very helpful.

Dining - We went "Dine as You Wish" and never had to wait more then a couple of minutes and usually went for dinner in the Main Dining Room between 7:30 and 8:00pm. We enjoyed most of the food, and really with the amount of meals we ate on board, the few that were not done well, were really out numbered. We ate in the Lido for most breakfasts and lunches and only a few dinners. We found a wide selection, but we were a little frustrated with the beverages. The only thing besides water we would drink in the Lido was lemonade, and often it was empty and took a while to get refilled. Also, in the MDR, if you were not drinking wine with your dinner, it seemed your only option was water. I did ask for coffee with my dinner to only find out that they usually only serve coffee with dessert. The only beverage More that we didn't have a problem with was HAPPY HOUR...lol...no problem there!

Entertainment - We attended showtime almost every night and really enjoyed the shows. We enjoyed the lounges, casino,an Art Auction and a few classes.

Service - We found the service to be superior and we were definitely looked after.

Embarkation and Disembarkation - We were expecting both to take a really long time having never cruised before - but it was so organized and was quick and painless.

Port Excursions are of course way over priced and you are much better off booking excursions privately. However, if you do not want to do the research and work yourself, then the ship excursions may be fine for you.

Our cruise was based in Europe, so we are not sure about other Holland America cruises, but we found that most people were 60 plus. My husband and I are in our 40's but get along with all ages and really loved the people we met. There were some honeymooners and couples in their 30's and 40's - but majority were older.

Our overall experience - loved it - we hope this will be the 1st of many more cruises, and would definitely cruise Holland America again.

Overall, our experience was amazing and we loved Holland America. Less

Cabin review: Westerdam Large Oceanview Stateroom Main 1108

We had booked an HH category and we were upgraded to a DD on the Main Deck. This was our first cruise and we did not know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised. We were very comfortable in our cabin, the bed is amazing! We had way more closet and storage space then we even needed. A few times we could hear them getting ready for a meal in the Vista Lounge above us, and when we were refueling we did smell the fumes for a short period.(twice) However, it was nice being greeted by the main desk every day and the elevator was right around the corner. We have absolutely no complaints about this cabin.

Port and Shore Excursions

We loved Dubrovnik - took ship shuttle up to the wall. We then bought our tickets and walked the entire wall, almost 2 hours. The views were amazing - it is such a beautiful city. We then explored the city - went to a small pier and walked everywhere. It is definitely a place that we would love to come back too.

Sleepy little village to walk around. Shopping and a few restaurants/cafes (wifi) You can chose to go to Olympia which we heard was nice tour. We chose to make it a quiet day after spending a week in Athens and Santorini.

We booked a tour online to go to Mdina, the cliffs, Blue Grotto and reserved tickets to the Hypogeum. It was a beautiful day and Malta is gorgeous. Highlights were definitely the 1/2 hour boat ride to the Blue Grotto - the water colors and caves were amazing. The Hypogeum can only take 10 people every hour and is booked weeks in advance. It is an amazing discovery and an emotional experience.

We had an over-nighter in Venice. We bought a 24 hour vaparetto pass and headed to the islands of Murano/Burano for the morning. Murano is famous for the glass blowing and is a very nice island. Burano is famous for lace making and we found it to be beautiful. The island is so colorful and the atmosphere is wonderful. There are great restaurants everywhere and Burano was truly a highlight at this Port. We then went to Venice and took a beautiful gondola ride through the inside canals. So peaceful and gorgeous! Venice was very busy and unfortunately the weather turned to rain and cut our evening short.
