Wowed by Celebrity

Sail Date: September 2010
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

This was our 21st cruise. We sailed on Celebrity in 99' and said probably never again. Eleven years later and eleven years older & wiser, Celebrity wowed us. We even booked a future cruise (open booking) w/ them.

Cabin was an inside--plenty of space, nice condition, decorated nicely. I'd suggest saving on the cabin w/ this busy of an itinerary because you are rarely in the cabin. Port days are approx 7a-7pm. Food and dining room service very good. Can't recall one thing that I didn't enjoy. Informal buffet good for when you are so dog tired that you don't feel like "dressing". We took formal clothes and never wore them. We did see one gentleman w/ shorts asked to leave DR to change at dinner. Ship entertainers were good. A few acts didn't make it or had ill members or family emergencies but ship staff filled in adequately. Not thrilled w/ Cruise Director. We were less critical of entertainment than we normally would have been b/c we turned in early to be ready for the next More day's tour.

Used shore excursions 4/5 days--all were good except for one. If we went again we'd venture more on our own instead of using pricey ship excrusions (our excursions cost more than our cruise fair). This is an ACTIVE itinerary. We probably walked 20-30 miles over the course of the week. We returned home VERY tired but would do it again in a heartbeat! Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Beautiful, big city w/ lots of to do AND lots of thieves! Go and enjoy Barcelona but be very aware. Awesome architecture of Gaudi is a must see. Lots of museums, street performers, cafes, etc. Have some Sangria! City is a 4 to 5 but I'd down grade it to 3 just because of the thieves!

Toured Florence on a walking tour in am and then went on to Pisa in pm. I liked Florence and would LOVE to go back to spend time in those museums. My husband was wowed by the leaning tower of Pisa. Me not so much. I'm thinking been there, done that. He's thinking--can't wait to go back to go up in the tower.

Toured Rapallo, Santa Margharita and Portofino. Portofino was a high point of the trip--this tiny town is just as sweet and scenic as all of those pics you've seen over the years.

Got bumped from docking in Naples, actually landed in Salerno. This where we had less than desirable tour to Pompeii(am hour is fine, three hours is painful) and the Amalfi coast (beautiful). The high points of Pompeii were the sweet, homeless dogs that the town cares for (take dog cookies) and the cameo factory where you can purchase these hand made wonders (cheaper than you think). I'd give Amalfi an A+. The local red wine was super.

Wonderful history, culture. So much to do, so little time. We did this port on our own. Took the train for $9 rt instead of ship's $89 do it on your own tour. Birg ticket allows you to use Rome metro as well. We mainly walked and took two cabs to get us around to: Colisseum, Forum, past Capitol (awesome!)Trevi Ftn, Navonna Piazza, Vatican Museum, St Peter's Basilica (beyond description). Look forward to going back and spending more time and maybe taking in a couple of museums and sitting andf eating those fantastic panini sandwiches.

Toured Nice, Eze (awesome) and Monaco. Enjoyed all but liked Eze especially.
