Love to Cruise Royal

Sail Date: September 2010
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

Arrived in San Juan the day of departure around 2:00pm - gathered our luggage, arrived taxi at the port by taxi within the hour. I would not recommend doing any transfers with the ship as it cost $19.00 plus $1.00 per bag for up to 5 people for a taxi. Better than the $16.75 per person transfer fee. Checkin was a breeze as we left our luggage at the door, checked in and was in the Windjammer by 3:30pm. Our only complaint was the staff here was not very friendly. Which we informed RCCL about.

Stateroom - Cabin #7140 - We were a little disappointed with the cabin as it sits at the canopy which covers the life boats and the balconies do not connect as in the newer ships. Our view was good only if you were interested in looking straight out. Nothing to see by looking down. We couldn't enjoy the balcony as it seemed everytime we would try someone was smoking (which is NOT ALLOWED) but couldn't tell where it was coming from to report it. Our stateroom attendant was very attentive. More He was very easily located when we needed him. We had towel animals 5 of the 7 nights. Air temperature was always comfortable. The room was located at the rear of the ship just a short walk from the elevators and dining areas. Luckily it seemed we had the best views to see the ports as we arrived.

Dining - We took advantage of the Reflections My Time Dining and chose the 6:45 seating. They always had our table waiting with the same staff. Our waiter Biju and assistant waiter Moo were super! We could not have asked for better. Biju was on his last two weeks before heading home and still was very attentive and ready to get us anything we needed. Moo has an incredible voice and we got to enjoy it several times, including a birthday song. The food was about average as far as mass production goes. Very good variety on the menus. You are offered an after dinner drink everynight.

Chops Grille - We did skip Reflections for one night to enjoy this special treat. Karen our waitress was so flustered by my husband that we ended up having a great laugh with her by the end of the night. I HIGHLY recommend spending the extra $25.00 per person for this treat. The crab cake is fantastic as is the Filet. My husband had the ribeye and he wished he had gotten the Filet as well. My sister had the Rack of Lamb and she said it was wonderful. We booked this online so we paid in advance so at the end of the meal we just paid for the tip. AGAIN HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Entertainment - We had a magician, Movie Show Comedian and a Group called Mosaic. Magician was entertaining, comedian was average but Mosaic was incredible. Even purchased their CD. check them out at www.notaboyband.com. RCCL production shows were not very good. We did attend the Love and Marriage show and it was entertaining, but missed out on the Game Show Quest. We have been to it before so knew what was going to happen.

Overall this was an incredible trip and we had a great time. Always something to do and as long as the weather cooperates with you it is a fantastic time.

We will continue to sail with Royal, even checked out the Oasis while on board. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Aruba - What a waste of time. We took the DePalm Island tour. All I can is DON'T. This is a small island off the coast of Aruba by an industrial park. All I have ever heard is people saying how beautiful Aruba is. I was not impressed. Of course the weather did not cooperate with us. The only FUN thing about this trip was the unlimited food/beverage and the Banana Boat ride. The Water Park and Snorkeling tour did not start until 10:00 am & 11:30 am respectivily and we were to leave the island by 12:30. Water park may have had three slides. Hopefully we just took the wrong tour and the Island is as nice as I have heard.

Curacao - LOVED LOVED it. We took the Beauties of Curacao and our tour director Nell was very knowledgable. It took us to places that were incredible. When we returned we took in some shopping and they had great stores. As far as doing the Port/Shopping Show on board and taking advantage of the "Free" stuff book. Don't - the free stuff is not worth the hassle. Most stores won't leave you alone so you can get the "free" items. Most of the stores already have the coupons for discounts off purchases in the store for you to take advantage of.

Dominica - Very interesting. We did the Ultimate Adventure Combo - Zip lining and River tubing. Recommend this to anyone that is athletic, in shape and not afraid of heights. The tour guides help you with everything from getting geared up and making sure you were hooked correctly at each platform. River Tubing was very refreshing, again the guides made sure you were on the right track and not getting stuck outside the current.

St. Thomas - All time favorite. Visited here last year as well and would return to the Island exclusively. We did not take a tour here, just spent the day shopping. We have made new friends in the Grand Jewelery store. They are very nice and honest. Purchased jewelery there last year as well as this year. If you go, see "Jackie Chan". Don't be scared to check out the "non-recommended" stores. They have good stuff as well.
