Epic freestyle on steroids

Sail Date: September 2010
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

The Epic more than met our expectations. Embarkation day was smooth, transfer from FLL involved a wait for the bus ( not a problem with us). Once at the terminal, we were on in 30 minutes. The family balcony cabin was well laid out, ample storage. The bathroom, sink layout has been well discussed, did not bother us. Our steward promptly addressed a clogged shower drain-no issues the rest of the week. The staff went out of their way to assist, always friendly with smiles. Officers were very visible throughout the week. Maintenance and cleaning was ongoing throughout the week. The service in the Manhattan room was attentive and fast. The music at dinner was a nice touch with some couples even dancing. We ate at three specialty restaurants with Cagney's being our favorite. However, the food and service was great in all. O'Sheehan's served very tasty lunch and breakfast. Never had an issue with getting reservations,

The ship was easy to get around with interactive screens on deck More 5,6 and 7 to find, venues, music etc. Signage was also adequate to guide one around. The water slides and rock climbing were a blast. No waiting on port days. The Pool decks were constantly maintained, therefore minimizing previous complaints of slippery decks when wet. yes, pools are small, not a deal breaker. Aft adult area well laid out. No problem finding deck chairs. Nice quiet area up on deck 18.

Entertainment-no lack of that, Blue Man-outstanding, Cirque also great, but tight seating. Second City-funny as usual. The duo in the atrium was excellent with quality and music variety. The magician was a riot. There was also a piano man, guitar player in addition to legends of Rock n Roll. At night there were several events at Spice H20. We never experienced long elevator waits except on disembarkation day, no surprise there. The shops were spread out, not cramped as typical on many cruise ships. NCL left us feeling we had a great week and will return in a heartbeat. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Epic Family Balcony Stateroom Deck 13 13147

Plenty of storage, good lighting. Tricky to get used to as your key card goes into slot by the door. The curve design was a fresh change. balcony, good sized. Privacy curtain between shower and room. The sink is novel, but,got used to it. Climate control was great. Luggage fit under the bed without a problem. Frig in room, can ahve contents removedto avoid charges. liked the reading lights on each side of the bed. The bed was comfortable, did not seem too short.

Port and Shore Excursions

The port has nice shopping area with a pool along food and music. We did the Chaccobin Mayan Ruins tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The ruins were interesting and worth the bus ride. The site was easy to walk around and well maintained.

This port was also our third time there. There is a shopping area immediately off the pier with visible security, local entertainers. The stores are new, fair pricing. I found the port to be cleaner than past visits with obvious upgrades to infrastructure since our 2001 visit. Our excursion was the Dolphin swim located 5 minutes from the pier. This was the best tour we have done to date. The facility was new, organized, clean with safe access to the water. The excursion exceeded expectations with in water dolphin interaction and an actual ride on the dolphin. After the swim/ride, the facility sells picture. While expensive, the pictures were very well done. Mexican food is available ( excellent in taste and quantity).

This was our third time here. We walked around, enjoyed talking with the local people. In town there are shops with island made items at fair prices. The ship is greeted by Island music and dancers. There is also shopping pier side with food, drinks and music. much improved over 8 years ago. fellow passengers related cab rides to resorts was expensive ($20 per each way). Very scenic view of the Island from the ship.
