Missed Hurricane Igor by two days...however,Bermuda welcomed us to its pink shores as we exited the Explorer of the Seas, Sept. 2010.We were two seniors on our second cruise. We traveled by Motorcoach from Rochester,N.Y.to Cape Liberty,N.J.accompanied by two AAA cruise directors, Sue and Lynn, who were excellent throughout the trip.
EMBARKATION: Very organized taking about 1/2 hour to complete. Passports were checked, paperwork completed, and security pictures taken; then everyone boarded a schuttle to the ship.
FOOD:The buffet food from the Windjammer[WJ] was good to very good while the main dining room[MDRm] food was excellent. There is no free 24 restaurant on board.Between 9pm & 6:30am food is only available at Cafe Promenade-Deck5. MNRm-The food was sight appealing, and delicious with an attentive wait staff mostly from India and the Phillipeans.WJ-The WJ had an abundance of food;the taste was good, but not great. Some items were lukewarm. We thought the eggs, chile and fries were very good and the desserts excellent.
SPORTS:There are numerous sports activities such as golf, basketball and swimming.GYM-The gym is excellent containing most of the same weight mach. as found in health clubs, plus aerobic mach. and exercise classes. Some sports venues are open 24 hours.
ENTERTAINMENT:This is abundant, ranging from trivia games, demonstrations and audience participation to shopping and a casino[30% air, 70%smoke]ICE SHOW-excellent, not to be missed. Free tickets are available the day before the show.THEATER SHOWS-Singing,dancing and comedy. All were excellent. The ship has a plethera of talented young performers and older comedians.
MISC:Rooms were fine, the bed comfortable, plenty of lighting, compact shower. -There is a free schuttle to carry people around the Dock Yd. to the pink transit busses [purchase passes on the ship] and the Bermuda Ferry. -Check your bill after 10pm the night before departure. We were mistakenly charged for additional purchases. We stood in a long line of guest cruisers w/similar circumstances during the morning of departure. The response was come back in 1/2 hour as the "right person" was not present. 1/2 hour later, we were told to return in 30 min. again.Meanwhile, the departure clock was ticking. Finally, upon the third visit, the charge was removed. It was not the amount of the charge, but the inconvenience to us and the lack of financial organization that left us annoyed
DISEMBARKATION:While we waited at our designated location aboared the ship, a PA announcement indicated that there was a problem w/the ship's clearance as per Port Auth. Police. This amounted to a 45min. delay The actual disembark. process from start to finish took only about 20min. We were told that Port Liberty depart. was smoother than that of NYC We can attest that it is much easier than departing from the Brooklyn pier.
Overall, an enjoyable vacation.
