Explorer Exceeds Expectations!
Destination: Canada & New England
Embarkation: Bayonne (Cape Liberty)
PROS: 1. Ease/Friendliness @ Cape Liberty (arrived around 11am boarded before noon) (left ship @ 9:30a, and was at vehicle by 10a) 2. Food and service at the Main Dining Room - 5 star plus 3. Cleanliness of public areas 4. Seasons- ice skating show 5. Additional entertainment- Jim David(comedian) and The Happenings 6. Weather (no rain) mostly mid 70s all week 7. Halifax pier- Multiple buildings with shops/foods
CONS: 1. Service and food selection at the Cafe Promenade (turkey would be a nice change from ham [not everyone eats pork]) sandwiches rarely changed 2. Activities/Timing - popular activities were scheduled for the same time, and final parade scheduled to start 15 min before the 5:30p seating at the MDR 3. Cruise Compass/TV media- Compass posted wrong info for times and weather- also logos printed backwards (they said temp was to be 88* actual was 67*) TV posted wrong dinner menu (previous nights) 4. Portland as a port of call- streets were dirty/graffiti sidewalks More difficult to walk, not wheelchair accessible 5. Bostons pier- No shops or restaurants within walking distance- had to take cab or bus ($$) into city to enjoy Boston 6. Dining room dress code not enforced @ dinner (ppl in shorts/flip flops)
This room was forward, about 4 rooms from the elevators. Hallways were always quiet, and never had any noise disturbance. There was a service closet and service stairs/elevators across from our room, but never had any issues. The doors were usually closed, and never heard any noise.
Balcony was nice. Room included a safe. Excellent design for space utilization. Huge closet. Old TV set not a clear picture. New linens were a place. Sheets felt like 600 thread count. Always hot water. Toilet area always had a bad smell like an outhouse. They cleaned it daily, but didn't help. Less

Port and Shore Excursions
From the breathtaking views of the islands to the quaint shops in town. Picture perfect! Shops and food venues were great. We ate at Testa's. Probably the best lobster/fish we have ever had. Bought most of our souvenirs here in Bar Harbor as well. Great variety.
Tender to/from was difficult, but then again we can't control the water/waves.
Sidewalks were in great shape and easy to use wheelchair; even up/down the hills.
A most do on your trip.
Let me state that I have visited Boston in the past, and enjoyed the trip(not by boat).
Salem is awesome, and we also enjoyed the BeanTown Trolly.
However, there is nothing offered at the cruise ship pier/port. We were given directions to a Dunkin Donuts that was a few blocks away, but there was nothing else within walking distance. There were 2 booths at the pier that gave you a map, and suggest a cab for about $20 each way to Quincy Market. Not very friendly or helpful. After 10 minutes we were back on board enjoying the ships sports deck.
Book a tour, or do not waste your time with getting off the ship in Boston.
Always a favorite.
The wooden boardwalk at the waterfront is really nice. I recommend the Frog Hopper, Maritime Museum, and Cows(ice cream shop.
Not sure if this is normal, because we did not see them on our last trip there in 2004, but lots of star fish near the shore. Every where you looked in the water you could see them.
Was disappointed in the amount of beggars/pan handlers. Safety was not a concern; it was just more of an annoyance having ppl keep coming up and asking for money.
Recommendation- Stay on the ship!!!!
Pulling into the port was beautiful. Lighthouses, sailboats, old brick buildings, etc.
Then you exit the boat. Sidewalks were in horrible shape. It was not possible to push anyone in a wheel chair to see the sights. Many buildings vacant with graffiti and liter throughout the streets. Public restrooms were awful, and I honestly felt unsafe. US Custom Agents were not friendly. Did enjoy the variety of shops (no different than the other ports though). I would recommend that RCI remove this as a port of call, and spend 2 days in Bar Harbor, ME.
St John's wins BEST WELCOME! Gift for guys(lapel pin) and girls(rose) Bagpipers playing.
City Market is a must. All around a good port. Easy access from ship with plenty to do within walking distance.
Ship left by 1:30p so a short day did not help. Never got to see the reversing falls. Either way still worth the time we had.
