Cabin: Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony

We booked our own flights to Venice as RCI flights are expensive and inconvenient. Embarkation was very easy and efficient and we were able to have lunch in the windjammer before going to our cabin.

As it was a special birthday we decided to book a balcony cabin. The cabin was very nice, if a little tired. However, when we went out onto our much looked forward to balcony, the passengers in the adjacent cabin were chain smokers and their smoke drifted over to our balcony and even invaded our cabin. Therefore we had to keep our balcony door closed all of the time and were unable to make use of the balcony when our neighbours were on theirs. We were really disappointed. We understood that cabins were non-smoking. I suffer from asthma and found it really uncomfortable. At no time during the booking process were we informed that passengers could smoke on their balcony. On the other parts of the ship smoking was restricted to one side. Why could this not be the case with balconies and this be made clear at the time of booking.

We have cruised with RCI 4 times now, 3 times on the Splendour, and have always had a lovely experience. However, little things like no chocolate on your pillow when you retire at night, no cold drinks whilst you waited to embark after visiting ports, extortionate drinks prices etc have made us review whether or not we will cruise with them again. One night our cruise newspaper delivered to the cabin was in German !!
