The Ruby Pricess is MINE!

Sail Date: July 2010
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

This is our first ever cruise and won't be our last. The ship was lovely. The staff were excellent. The food was terrific. All in all we thought it was great value for money. We didn't think much of Monaco - for somewhere so wealthy it looks a bit dated. Venice - we've been before and loved it, but it was way too busy, St Marks was like a road works site, so sadly, we weren't impressed this time round. Would rather have had Dubrovnik on the itinerary. Swimming in Mykonos was excellent. Taxi to the beach is the best way to go.

One nice touch from Princess - on returning to the ship on those very warm days, we were greeted on the pier by staff with ice cold towels. Very appreciative of that gesture. We went anytime dining and that was a good choice. Met lots of lovely people - didn't meet anyone we didn't like! Made lots of friends. We tried the Crown grill which was very nice, but Sabatinis was particularly good.

The on board entertainment was also very good and the More cruise director, Lisa Ball worked very hard to ensure everyone knew what was going on. Never having cruised before, we don't know what to judge Princess against, however we feel Princess to be top notch and will have no hesitation in traveling with them again - after all the Ruby Princess is mine!

B520 - we were worried that we might feel as if we were in a cave. It would have been an extra £1000 for a balcony. We decided to put that money toward private tours and that was the best decision we could have made. The room was very comfortable, very little hum from the engines. Nice quiet location, easy access to lifts but not too close. We had asked for an egg crate cover top for our mattress and that was a good decision (based on other peoples reviews on cc)We had a very comfortable stay on board the Ruby. We were hardly in the room as there was so many days off ship and things to do at night. Less

Arranged a private tour with Paul the Greek Taxi driver. What a man!! As we were having so much success on our private tours, some of the other people on the Ruby Princess asked if they could join us on our Athens tour. We had originally booked for four people so I emailed Paul and before I knew it I had a fifteen seater bus for our tour! He took us round all the sights and as he once lived in the states, he spoke fluent English. He was very entertaining and we all had a great time with him. Another nice touch - he had a fridge in the bus full of ice cold bottles of water. It was another very hot day and that water was very welcome.

Pisa then Florence were very doable in the time we had available. We went with Rome in Limo, Francesco as our driver. We were first people that day to climb Pisa tower then off to Florence for some very interesting sightseeing.(Some other cruisers on the bus tours didn't get up the tower as the lines were too long by the time they arrived) It was a very hot day and when we had enough of the city sights, Francesco took us back to the ship via the rolling Tuscan countryside, stopping at an old farm and vineyard on the way. Other passengers who took the ships tour, didn't get to see the extra things we saw, didn't get the personal attention we got. Private tours are the only way to go (and cheaper than ships tours)

People told us we could do Istanbul on our own. After such terrific experiences on small private tours with our own guides, I didn't want to take a chance and whilst in Mykonos the day before we were due in Istanbul, I emailed Ephesus Deluxe to see if they could arrange a tour for us and another couple. As I didn't receive a reply before we left Mykonos I assumed it would be touch and go if Ephesus Deluxe could arrange a tour at such short notice. On arrival in Istanbul our beautiful Mercedes minivan (curtains, smoked windows, leather seats, air con etc) was waiting for us along with our guide Funda. What a great place Istanbul is. Very busy but the people were friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. The Blue Mosque was closing for prayers as we arrived, but Funda got us in. Much less fuss than going into the Vatican! The people in the mosque seemed pleased to have us there as their guests. We saw all the other major sights including the Topkapi Palace, St Sophia, Hippodrome, cisterns, Grand Bazaar and Spice market. This is one not to be missed and we are so glad we had our own van and guide. (we saw the tram on the way back and the people were packed in like sardines)You're on holiday - why rough it? We had a trip we will never forget and didn't waste time by getting lost, waiting for public transport etc.

We had booked a tour for two couples with Ephesus deluxe who we also got at the last minute to take us round Istanbul. Our guide was Gokhan. All I can say is Ephesus is terrific and Gokhan is just as good! The old ruins are terrific especially the Terraced houses. When we had seen everything, we set off on our way back into Kusadasi. Gokhan said he would like to take us to a pottery shop (he did admit without hesitation or us asking that he would get a cut on anything we bought) We told him we weren't interested in buying souvenirs all we wanted to do was have a swim in the sea as it was so hot. Before we knew it we were at the beach! (we had brought swimsuits just in case) Gokhan told us we had an hour to splash about and thats what we did! Absolutely terrific. It wasn't a fancy beach full of foreign tourists, it was a local, long and sandy beach busy with Turkish families. It was such a hot day and that water was so refreshing. It was the perfect end to our two excursions in Turkey. Great country and very nice people. I would certainly go with Ephesus deluxe again.

This time we toured Pompeii and the Amalfi coast with Sorrento Star. Our guide for Pompeii (also booked though SS) was Lucilla. She was absolutely fantastic! We learned so much in such a short time. Then off on the Amalfi coast drive which was beautiful. Rather than drive back to the ship, we were able to get the fast ferry from Sorrento back across the bay of Naples, docking right beside the Ruby Princess. Nice way to return to our ship!

Fantastic. Once again done with the help of Rome in limo. Maurizio was our driver and he took very good care of us. We saw ALL the sights and he took us to a restaurant near to the Vatican where we had a terrific Italian meal at non tourist prices! How good was that? He drove us to within very short walking distance of all the sights. We never had to walk more than two - three minutes) Vatican tour with private guide,Cecilia, arranged through Rome in Limo was terrific. As usual, back to the ship before the coaches which meant we had the pick of the sun loungers by the pool!
