First, let me say that we have never felt the need to go online and review any of the cruises that we have taken, until this cruise. This was our 4th cruise with the Princess. We have also cruised with Royal Caribbean. This cruise was on the Sea Princess, Destination - Alaska. The ports were all great - Victoria, Juneau, Haines and Ketchikan. Seeing Glacier Bay was a highlight. Weather was wonderful - couldn't have been any better. Sun at every port. Our complaint is with the crew, supervisors and the ship itself.
Princess' catch phrase - Escape Completely - was what we wanted to do after the first couple of days at sea - escape completely from this ship! We sailed with 4 other couples - 2 couples had never cruised, 1 couple had only cruised with Royal Caribbean, the couple that had talked us all into this cruise, have only cruised Princess and us who have cruised both R.C. and Princess.
Not enough space to go into all that occurred so we will hit just the highlights:
First night dinner - Our friend asked for Lemonade (which he has always gotten before on Princess no problem) was told, "No, We only have that in the buffet area." "Would it be possible for someone to go get a lemonade?" "No".
Next Morning - Breakfast. 4 to 5 crew members standing in circle talking while people are trying to get their attention for silverware, coffee, etc. Finally, our friend got 1 of the crews attention - "Could we get another place setting?" The reply - "They are over there". We're paying how much money and we now are busing are own tables!! We had to ASK for everything. Crew were walking around but not once asked if we needed anything.
Mid-afternoon - Sitting out on the aft deck reading - Water begins to cascade down from above onto our friends. We yell up to the crew member to stop because people are down here. Ignored us and kept washing down the furniture. 2 days later sitting out on our balconies, water again begins cascading over the railings. This time, we all got wet. Crew member was told to wash down the upper deck by his supervisor. Aren't you suppose to do this when people are asleep?
Numerous children on board without any supervision what so ever. Elevators were constantly stopping on floors where no one was waiting because the darlings were running up & down the stairs pressing the floor buttons before the elevators arrived. Children in the hot tubs-no parents around and no crew members willing to tell them to get out. This going on while people are trying to watch the "Movies Under the Stars". We were told by Maria - Guest Services - that the cruise line didn't want to offend their paying parent passengers. What about the paying passengers who were trying to enjoy the movie??? What would have happened if a child had drowned or fell down the stairs and broke their neck? How offended would the paying parents have been?
We read reviews before we got on this ship about sewer odors and backed up toilets. We didn't pay any attention because the ship was in dry dock in September. We thought these problems would have been repaired. Not in the aft elevator by the Vista Lounge. It was horrible. Plus we spoke to people who had backed up toilets, showers not working, toilets not flushing. What was done in dry dock in September?
Other things such as not taking reservations at the Steak house while they are open. The steak house isn't even a "house". They just close off one side of the buffet and call it a "steak house"! Photographers unwilling to take a formal picture because the person wanted the picture taken a certain way. But the worst was on the last day at sea - Trivia time in the Wheelhouse Bar. Nic from Argentina was the "host". I use the term very loosely. He decided that since the Trivia game was over and the cruise was coming to an end, he would "unload". His words, not mine. He proceeded to tell us, paying passengers who pay his salary, that we are "incredibly wasteful. Instead of taking only 1 sheet of paper for Trivia, you take 3 or 4. Then you also "complain" (I believe he used the "b" word instead of complain) that the pencils in the box aren't sharpened. People you need to go green!!!" We were appalled!!! If he wants people to go green, then hand out 1 paper per team instead of letting us wasteful slobs get our own paper!!! We could not believe that a crew member would stand there and berate cruise passengers!! It was unprecedented for us.
There are definitely some severe problems on the Sea Princess. While we were on board we did inform Guest Services of our dissatisfaction. They said that our comments would be forwarded higher up. Who knows if that will happen. But we did inform them that we would be telling anyone who might be thinking of taking a cruise with Princess not to take the Sea Princess at any time and we stand by that statement. We will never take this ship again. The 2 couples that never cruised before, will never cruise again with Princess or any line. They were that disgusted. The couple who had only cruised with Royal Caribbean will stay with R.C. and only cruise Princess if the deal is too good to pass up. Us and the other couple will give Princess another shot but definitely not the Sea Princess ever again!!! We were not the only disgusted passengers on this ship and I'm sure the comment boxes were full. Princess you need to get back to being passenger friendly and live up to your slogan or people will "Escape Completely" to another cruise line.
