The condition of the Volendam was shabby by cruise ship standards, including other Holland America cruises we took. Crew members would cut in front of us, or ignore us while they chatted with each other.
This is my 11th cruise and the worst of the lot. It wasn't Holland America that was at fault, but the guy in charge of the Volendam. Things that were not tidy when we first boarded still were not tidy when we left.
By contrast, our land tour (by Holland America) was marvelous, organized, and fun. Scott Carter is the best tour director on the 10 cruises I've been on and handled everything so well via train, bus and river boat.
Avoid the Volendam at all costs. Even the pianist sounded like an amateur, in contrast to what we enjoyed on other cruises, including those on Holland America ships.
Someone in charge did a miserable supervising job, and it seems like Holland America put the worst and least-trained personnel all on one ship. Again, it's our first experience of this kind, and we've traveled from China to Turkey, most of Europe, North, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
Other passengers filed complaints, too, on their survey cards, as we did.
There needs to be a complete overhaul of management on the Volendam. Soon!
