Mediterranean Fling

Sail Date: June 2010
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Southampton

We were a family of 8 (4 adults and 4 children aged 13, 12, 9 and 2 years) looking for a cruise that would suit 3 generations - myself, my husband, my daughter, my son-in-law and 4 grandchildren. Independence of the Seas certainly catered for all of us, whether relaxing on deck, having fun at the Aqua Park/swimming pools with the kids, watching people on the Flow-rider, mini-golf or Ice-skating for the kids with the superb Ice-shows for all the family and also the wonderful shows in the Theatre.

We took a flight from Edinburgh to Southampton (all booked for us) was met by the Rep at Southampton and taken by coach to the Dock. As soon as we got on board we headed for the Windjammer Buffet for a lovely lunch with lots of choice to suit everybody but in the evening we ate in the Dining Room where our Table for 8 was booked for us each evening and served to us by our very attentive Waiters (2) - breakfast or other meals could be served in the Cabin if you wished.

The More service by all the crew was great and our Cabin (which was of good size) was kept spotless by our Cabin steward - each evening it was lovely to come back to find a different "Animal Towel" on our bed! There are children's Club for children of all ages - toys available for the little ones.

We very much enjoyed all the Ports of call and visiting the local markets. We all enjoyed the whole cruise - one piece of advice - go for the tickets for the Ice-shows at 8am on the day available. Disembarking was no problem with the coach back to Southampton and our onward flight to Edinburgh all arranged for us. Less

Cabin review: Independence of the Seas Interior Stateroom Deck 2 7529

Our Cabin was very adequate for our needs - when we arrived it was set up as a double bed but we asked the Steward to change this to put the 2 single beds at either side of the room with the 2 bed-side cabinets in the middle - this gave us more room. The closet was adequate, with plenty clean towels always available - only complaint is that Royal Caribbean do NOT provide any toiletries except soap or gel in the shower area. Individual bottles, including body lotion would be appreciated as there would be no need to carry these items adding to our luggage weight (important nowadays with airlines). The location of the Cabin was fine and we experienced no noise problem.

Port and Shore Excursions

My daughter, son-in-law and 4 children bargained with a Taxi driver at the Pier to take them on a Trip to Pisa. They thoroughly enjoyed seeing the leaning Tower of Pisa and the kids bought small gifts back for their friends. My husband and I took the shuttle bus into Livorno and enjoyed this.

We have visited Gibraltar before and so we spent our time shopping in the Duty-Free shops but it is possible to book a Trip up the Rock to see the wonderful view from the top, visit the caves and see the Barbary Apes.

The ship put on a shuttle bus to take us into Civitavecchia where we spent the day. This is a very small resort but it has a nice market up the small slope and turn to your left.

We took the shuttle bus into Cagliari as it is rather too long to walk from the Port. We had a lovely shopping day and enjoyed this.

We were all very impressed with our visit to Vigo. You simply walk off ship and you are in town. There is a beach (although we did not have time to visit this) but this is a very busy shopping and market town. We finished our time ashore relaxing with a drink in a cafe near to the ship, reflecting on the great time we had had over the past 2 weeks.

The whole family was looking forward to this Port as we wanted to go to the beach. We very much enjoyed the short sail in the Tender to shore and enjoyed the views. The beach is a short walk to the right as you leave the Tender. The 4 children had a super time swimming and then we had a quick look around the shops before returning to the ship.
