My husband and I have just returned from the highlights of the mediterranean cruise abord the Thomson Dream. Thomson asserts this is their "newest" ship. This is like saying that gummy bears are a fat free food. Technically correct, yet seriously misleading. This ship was purchased from another cruise line and repainted. This hulk was built several decades ago. This was only the first stretch of the immagination in Thomson's advertising. This was supposed to be rated a five star experience. I would give an overall rating of barely three stars.

The ship itself presented a host of problems. The vessel is showing its age. The elevators hold only about three people and work on only a semi-regular basis. The general vicinity of the elevators had a constant strong odor of what I would immagine to be a combination of marine diesel and engine oil. I guess I know what it's like work below deck in the engine room. The occupant of the cabin across the hall had the misfortune of having their toilet clog and flood the bathroom. They were without a bathroom for three days. They were eventually relocated when a cabin became available due to a passenger who took ill and went for medical attention in port mid-cruise. The ceiling in the hall was open virtually the whole time with buckets catching the dripping fetid water from the sewage pipes. During the day time we heard a constant racket as the pipes were worked on. The odor was not pleasant to say the least. not exactly five stars.

Due also I think to the age of the ship, the buffet was somewhat difficult to navigate during meal time and left me with a deja vu type experience reminiscent of riding on a crowded subway. Similarly, the pool deck was in no way adequately equipped to accomodate the number of guests on the ship on days when most wanted to sunbathe. I found myself fighting for a space and a chair to lie in the sun.
