Carnival Glory - Western Caribbean

This is our third Carnival ship we have been on. We have been on the Pride/Victory/and this time the Glory, and I have mixed feelings about each.

Our embarkation was terrible at Port Canaveral this time. We were held up for almost 2 hours in the hallway before getting to move forward. There were no chairs to sit on, no A/C, everyone was sitting on the floor or standing up and nobody bothered to inform us of the cause of the holdup and we finally got on.

The public rooms were nice, much better than the Victory, the atrium had a nice comfortable feel to it and the couple who sang there at night were really good. Our cabin was comfortable for me and my wife, they did not have the shore excursion menu on the tv when we got to our room, so don't expect to book your excursions when you first get on. Be sure to remember if you are a first time cruiser, the stuff in the fridge IS NOT FREE!!!! The fridge was also locked, the cabin steward has to unlock it.

The dining room the first night was an unorganized mess, the crew was really out of synch and didn't pay very good attention to us. A couple that came with us ordered wine and they never received it. I ordered 2 desserts and only received 1. They never asked if we wanted coffee with dessert, so we were a little perturbed to say the least, but the service got better as the week went on. The food was pretty good, but I would like to ask Carnival to please change the menu. We have had the same menu on every ship we have been on and it needs to changed.

The Emerald Room restaurant is fantastic!!! I highly recommend it. It only costs $50 plus gratuity for 2 people, but it is well worth it so book early because it only has a few tables.

The shows were good, but also we had seen the same shows before on the other ships. The stand up comedians were funny, but the so called magic show we looked forward to was very little magic and it was a dance number instead. We were not happy about that. I was not happy with the pool games. The hairy chest contest is old, its time to come up with something new to offer people.

The shore excursions were pretty good at some ports. My wife and I did the jungle ATV adventure in Cozumel and we really enjoyed it. Be sure to wear sunglasses and don't be afraid to get dirty, because you will get filthy with black dirt. But mostly the Mexican ports were a waste of money unless you like shopping or historical ruins.

I was particularly upset that the library was only open 2 hours a day, that is stupid. What if someone wanted a book or game because they didn't get off the boat? I don't like this setup and it needs to be opened for everyone all day.

The cruise director was John Heald, who has been with Carnival for 20 years was funny, but we did not like the fact that most of the skits he did were set up, and that he did the same thing last cruise. It would have been better to have people picked out at random instead of already knowing who he was going to pick. It just seemed so phony.

My wife and our friends really liked the dessert bar Creams. The strawberry cheesecake is delicious!!!! better than the cheesecake in the dining room, its only $2 a slice, but well worth it.

The hot tub in the spa is very nice, the water is like a warm bath and 2 waterfalls rain down on you. It is very relaxing after a day onshore or just chillin out. Definitely give it a try.

Disembarkation was at Port Everglades because of the storm. We were bussed to Port Canaveral and it went well for us because we were on the second deck called to get off because we had transportation at the port. Those people were called first, then people who booked flights through Carnival, then everyone else. The final insult was that we were charged gratuities and phone charges to call home($7.00 a minute). The cruise before Ivan at least got 15 minutes free to call home, we got nothing.

For the most part, the ship was nice. We were disappointed that we had to do the Western Caribbean and 2 extra days at sea because of Hurricane Jeanne, but we made do and had a good time in spite of it all. We are not going to do Carnival for awhile, going to do Royal Caribbean next trip. Carnival needs to do something to change its ships and activities because it is really getting stale and it needs some serious overhauling.
