Dining selections on Liberty of the Seas

Sail Date: February 2010
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

Having cruised with a variety of friends and family for 8 times before this, for our ninth cruise we took the recommendation to try the My Time dining option. We were cruising with 2 other couples, and this was the first time for all of us on a Freedom class ship.

We found the dining room to be lovely, but the My Time dining option was not a good experience. We will return to the traditional dining schedule/seating for our next cruise! The lines for My Time seating were extremely long and slow, and that was even with reservations and early arrival. We were disappointed that we could not have the same waiters for the duration of the week with this dining option, but tried to make the best of it. We have always enjoyed the daily conversations with the same waiters/assistant waiters, and missed that during this cruise. It did seem like the wait staff simply doesn't care quite as much about the service of the My Time diners. The extra spark & charm which they add to each More meal was missing, because we weren't returning each evening to the same table/staff.

We had reservations to eat at Chops Grille one evening, and it was a wonderful experience! The food selections were all superb, and we found that though each person orders his own preferred side dishes, the sides are all served family style. For our table of six, we had approx. 12 side dishes served in large family style dishes. We got steaks which were far bigger and better than anything we had ever been served anywhere. My filet Mignon was butterflied because of my medium-well preference, and was still tender, juicy, and thicker than any steak I've eaten that wasn't butterflied. The dessert selections were unique to this restaurant, and were far beyond of the wonderful desserts we've gotten in the main dining room. We could not praise Chops enough, and plan to take one night out to eat at this restaurant on our future cruises!

The flow rider was a real treat to watch. We opted to not try it because of the high winds and cool temperatures, but we would like to cruise on a ship with this again - what a fantastic feature!! The staff which worked this area was wonderful, very helpful in teaching beginners and helping all ages and abilities to learn how to surf!

Our best days were the at-sea days and our day in Cozumel, Mexico. The weather was a little cooler than we'd hoped (50 in Miami!), but we made the most of it and loved our time on Liberty of the Seas. It is a beautiful ship, and we would choose it again. Less

Cabin review: Liberty of the Seas Promenade Stateroom Deck 6

Loved our Promenade Stateroom - this is the second time we've selected that type of cabin. It is so nice to have the prices of an inside cabin with a window into the Promenade, to see what is going on at different times of the day and evening. Beautifully decorated, and loved having the small couch AND a window seat - very comfortable for 2 people.

Port and Shore Excursions

We had reservations to do a power boat/snorkeling excursion, but it was cancelled the night before due to mechanical failure of some sort We were given roughly an hour (once we got the message) to reschedule another excursion, but the two others we were interested in were already filled up. So our money was refunded, and we spent the day walking through the shops of the port. We had heard a lot of people talk about how Belize is "the" place to shop, but we found it lacking as a shopping port. Perhaps that is because it was primarily high end jewelry/purse/perfume stores. We enjoy seeing the stores that sell local wares, and there was not very much of that. We did find a lovely spot to have lunch, right off the pier amidst the shopping. We ate on the upper terrace of one of the shop buildings - had a lovely view of the ship, and warm breezes blowing on us.

Having been to Costa Maya once before, where we did a Mayan ruins excursion, there wasn't much left that we wanted to explore here. We highly recommend the excursion, we loved it when we did it several years ago with our children - but on this trip, we spent the day shopping in the village right off the pier. It was a beautiful & sunny day, but very windy. We enjoyed the shopping, the beach area - which is beautiful, although is not for swimming. A very rocky coast with rough waters.

We were looking for something new to do in Cozumel, after hearing that many of the beaches had been washed away by hurricanes in recent years. So we booked an excursion to Passion Island, and this because our very best day of the cruise! We took a large catamaran from the port to Passion Island, where we were the guests for a day. We had beautiful beaches which were quiet and only for those who had come on our excursion. There were ocean trampolines, and other "water toys", but by and large it was a quiet and beautiful beach day. Our lunch was included - a wonderful and huge buffet meal. There were some little shops to browse in, with a lot of native things such as silver, pottery, etc. My husband took a long hike on the island and came back with beautiful pictures of scenery and a quiet chapel which was hidden on the island. It was a beautiful day of relaxing on the beach and in the sun, and we would definitely go there again if we return to Cozumel!

This was a beautiful island. We spent some time on the lovely seven mile beach, where the view is classic Caribbean - so beautiful! Also spent a couple hours shopping near the pier.
