Thursday evening March 28th. We left home about 8: 30pm. Our daughter Allyson drove us to Sydney airport, where we stayed overnight in the Formula One Hotel. A truly very basic hotel but our room was spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. We both slept well until 5am, and then boarded the 5:30am shuttle for the short drive to the airport. Check-in was quick and easy, (we'd used the internet check-in, so we already had our boarding passes.

Our Singapore Airlines flight left on time and our eight hour fight to Singapore was very comfortable. The three hour lay-over in Singapore passed quickly and our Singapore flight to Beijing also left on time, arriving in Beijing just over five hours later. We found Customs and Immigration extremely efficient and our bags were already on the carousel waiting collection. After a very long day, it was really nice to see the familiar face of our tour guide Bevis waiting for us at the gate. The journey from the airport to the Novotel Peace Hotel was very quick as it was past midnight and there was not a lot of traffic. Our room was very much to our satisfaction located on the 17th floor (Premier level) and we both enjoyed a very good sleep that night.

Sat. March 27th. While eating our breakfast, Jeff and Colleen, our friends from Canada who were on a cruise with us almost twelve months ago joined us. It was very exciting seeing them again. As arranged, at 8:30am we all left the hotel with our guide Bevis for a tour of the Heavenly Palace and Llama Temple. We then returned to the Hotel, where Russell and Louise, (two friends from Melbourne), whom we also met on a cruise last year, were waiting. Bevis then took us all to the Pearl & Silk Market. Afterwards, we returned to the hotel in need of some R & R and Bevis escorted Jeff, Colleen, Russell and Louise to a Dinner and Show. We decided to take advantage of our Premier Status, complimentary drinks and snacks in the 19th floor lounge! Actually the snacks, as we've discovered before, more than satisfy our appetite for a dinner. While we were there a group of Australians invited us to join their party and we had a great time sharing experiences in China with them.
