What a Way to Celebrate Turning 50!

Sail Date: April 2010
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: New Orleans

We have just returned from a fantastic cruise on the NCL Spirit making it reposition from New Orleans to Boston. This was my 11th cruise and 3rd with NCL. This was the first time my husband and I took a cruise longer than 7 days and it was great. The additional sea days made it very relaxing and gave an opportunity to meet other passengers and get to know the crew.

We splurged on a "Zodiac Suite" and it was worth every penny - especially the luxury bath. These suites were recognized by Cruise Critic as Best Suites and we agree. The services of the butler and the concierge were terrific and we enjoyed the VIP treatments, especially the special restaurant for breakfast and lunch and the premium seats for shows.

Staff were personable, efficient and attentive. The boat is a bit older (although recently refurbished) and a bit smaller than the newer ships. We found it just right. The decor is a bit more elegant than on some ships, with beautiful Asian styling. More

We enjoyed the freestyle dining and ate most meals in the specialty restaurants. The upcharges can add up, but we found the increase in quality and service worth it, although the meals we had in the main dining rooms (no charge) were also very good.

We enjoyed the trip from start to finish and especially appreciated sailing into our home port of Boston. Less

Spectacular bathroom, comfy bed, small balcony, limited storage space. Concierge and butler service were great. Loved the espresso machine in the room!

Port and Shore Excursions

We took a private tour of the island by taxi and enjoyed the scenery. We ended our day at Palm Beach, renting a couple of beach chairs and swimming in the beautiful Caribbean waters.

We did not take a shore excursion. We have been to this port a couple of other times and nothing caught our fancy. However, the cruise port is fun. You dock, so access is easy. The port has a free pool with swim-up bar and a variety of shops in a village setting. We enjoyed the dancing and musical entertainment. It makes for a fun and free day (unless you indulge in the shops.)

We did a private walk around Willemstad. It is a visually spectacular town, easy to get around and perfect for a photographer. The colors and the architecture are magnificent. We were in port on a Sunday, so many shops were closed but the Floating Market was open early. The heat was tiring, so we returned to the ship fairly early and enjoyed the views from our balcony instead.

Due to number of ships in port we were required to tender into Hamilton, which was long and not very efficient. We hired a private driver for a tour of the island and enjoyed the scenery. We would like to return on another cruise.

We embarked from here and spent 3 days pre-cruise. We were in New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival which was a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the food and music of New Orleans.

The embarkation experience was great and the location on the River Front cannot be beat.
