Voyager of the Seas April 4th Galveston, Roatan, Costa Maya.
Travel to Galveston was the day before giving us time to see a bit of the Island and relax a bit. Arrival at Houston Bush was on time, and our Galveston Limo drive Chris was waiting for us. Our drive was uneventful and Chris was engaging and informative. The Hotel Galvez was defiantly as advertised. This is a classic hotel and many accurate reviews are available. We didn't find any of the negatives, so take those with a grain of salt. The rooms are super clean, and smaller that some luxury hotels, but plenty of room for an overnight. Sunday was Easter, so the buffet was very busy, with service for over 1000, the lobby was full but manageable. A nice sunny walk took us to Fish Tales for dinner. It was very busy, but they made an effort to get us seated and our wait at the bar upstairs wasn't too long. Food was good, prices were average to a little above and the air conditioning was too powerful for our seats. Around 730pm we saw the fog roll in..........
Sunday we monitored Cruise Critics Board and kept in touch with Royal. After killing time at the Galvez, ( they were VERY accommodating on our check out time!) we walked around the pier and Strand area of Galveston. This area seems to be recovering from the hurricane, but also seems a bit worn out and tired. We wouldn't put Galveston on our list of places to visit as a destination. The Tremont House is the Sister property to the Galvez and we enjoyed a nice dinner in the bar/lobby area. Galveston embarkation was a mess. This really needs to be addressed and actively managed. A public address system should be added, or bullhorns purchased for those who walk the line with information while looking for priority boarding. Security screening should be expanded and addressed. The port authority and Royal need to work on this together, this is a constant topic of this board. We have sailed twice, with two fog issues and two "customs" related lengthy delays. While the fog cannot be controlled, the other pier issues must be addressed to minimize the impact of the fog.
