Overall a Pleasant Experience

Review for the Eastern Caribbean Cruise on Eurodam

I'm reading a lot of harsh criticism of this ship, and most of it, based on our experience, is undeserved.

First, our biases: We didn't choose this cruise, it chose us. I am a physician who was invited to teach an onboard CME course for other physicians in return for free passage. I brought my wife. We generally like small-boat cruises, such as those offered by Special Expeditions; our last large-boat cruise was at least 20 years ago (also on Holland America), so we decided to give large ships another shot. Somewhat to our surprise, it was quite pleasant, and we enjoyed ourselves.

The trip wasn't hassle-free, of course (what trip is?), but we got our major hassle (and it wasn't that major) out of the way on the first day. When you arrive at the dock, you are instructed to attach tags to your luggage with your room number printed on them -- the luggage is then carted off, to be run through Xray and placed in your stateroom. (If you are considering bypassing this service and carrying your big bags on with you, don't -- your stateroom won't be ready for several hours, and you don't want to be shlepping big suitcases to lunch and around the ship for half a day.)

Cabin Review

Veranda room on the observation (11th) deck -- spacious and perfectly adequate. We noticed our veranda was smaller than our friends' on deck 8, but it was big enough. Very quiet, lovely view (can't get any higher than deck 11 on Eurodam).
