Norwegian Sun - Alaska

Sail Date: August 2004
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver

Just got back from a wonderful week aboard the Norwegian Sun. Had some trepidation about going, as had read some less than complimentary reviews. Also felt that I would be disappointed because we had cruised Holland America, which is supposed to be a class above. My fears were not realized. While the ship was not five star all the way, everything was at least very good, with some parts being excellent.

The ship itself was very good. We had an inner cabin (a poor choice on our part as contrary to a Caribbean cruise, there's a lot to see, and it would be nice to watch the scenery from your own balcony), and it was small, but clean, new and functional. The public areas were great, and best of all, they didn't push the casino gambling or bingo.

Entertainment was great; especially the evening shows. They had a very professional broadway type show(we paid big bucks locally to see a musical review of similar quality to the ship's show), the talent they brought in was More excellent. They had dance teams that were world ranked. And there was always some show or entertainment to take in - Holland America had much less to offer.

Food was good to very good. Surprisingly the buffets had some excellent choices. the main dining rooms were OK, but some meals were disappointing; sort of the quality of a family restaurant chain. We didn't go to the speciality restaurants as I can't get around paying for an all inclusive, and then paying again to dine - it takes away from the all inclusive concept. We did sample some of the speciality food restaurant fare, and felt that it wasn't much better then the stuff they are serving to the rest of us. The food certainly was not terrible as suggested by some.

We enjoy working out/exercising. The fitness director was superb - she offered a variety of different exercise classes and fun activities. She also hosted a walk about at every port of call, so that we could get in some exercise and see the local spots.

The best was not anything to do with the ship - it was the wonderful scenery and breathtaking beauty of inner waterway. The ship went through Tracey Arm and we saw Sawyer glacier - absolutely spectacular. Less
