Reunion cruise - mixed feelings

Sail Date: February 2010
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Tampa

This was our big family and friends cruise with 41 people booked into the cruise. Many first time and probably last time cruisers and many seasoned cruisers. This was my 5th cruise 2nd on carnival and it was fun and good but not great and not one that I would choose again for a group cruise of mixed cruisers. We had from age 8 up to age 81 on the cruise.

Food - fair not fantastic, soups were awesome, breakfast cold, service good once we complained about the drink waiter not serving us. Our waiter wasn't as friendly as others nor did he remember our names (didn't even try) as all the previous waiters in comparison to this one always did.

room - great we had one small complaint at the beginning of cruise as it was way to cold in our room and it was fixed immediately our steward was awesome.

ship - clean. Had a problem at the end which delayed us 6 hours (one engine not working or something like that) which for almost all of our party caused 1 to 3 days More delay of leaving Tampa. I have heard from all but one group that the rooms were paid for and money for meals taken care of but one group had to rent a car and leave from Orlando or they would not have been able to get home to Canada till Friday. Hopefully carnival picks up that tab time will tell. For us we were staying till wed anyhow so not a problem.

excursions - all good except the tulum myan ruins. we were an hour late leaving the ship due to a CHAOS in getting us off the ship never felt more like a heard of cattle before and why we had to meet in the follies before hand was a joke they just said ok make your way down to the gang way along with half the ship. we should have just met on the pier to begin with. the tour itself was a little disappointing but then again we were in Mexico. Home of the long winded guides and pushy sales people promoting their own products. Plus our entire group was split up between at least 3 buses it was suppose to be the one group activity we had. And when we got to the ruins because we were split up on different buses that arrived at different times we still did not meet up.

Zip-line in Belize - awesome must do. Grand cayman adventure thanks to kelly tours was awesome. Roatan - wished we would have booked a tour not much of a port otherwise but we rented a car and explored on our own. Would have liked more time there. BEAUTIFUL island but shortest stay.

photography - POOR very low marks. not only ours but looking at every one's photos eyes closed, shadows, missing arms or heads of people. what a waste of money and time. we normally buy 6 to 12 pictures and this time our cabin bought 1 and it wasn't very good but it was our group shot. the service at the counter was poor too. We bought a reusable underwater camera and they didn't sell replacement film that is not smart. why they can't go to a system like Disney has with a photopass is beyond me. Would save time and money for everyone. just have a bank of computers where you can view your photos and if in a group more than one person can buy the same photo as well.

Bar service - good drinks were well made and generous

Casino - Fair, drink service good but the casino itself horrible their new card system was not liked and many machines had a problem with them.

ATM- don't use see warning on carnival board

General service - fair, being greeted found several unhelpful and unfriendly people.

Entertainment - was good. lots of activities and entertainment was mostly good. Comedians were awesome as was the hypnotist.

spa - awesome great service

fitness room- fair very busy in the mornings hard to get into.

departure and embankment - smooth, fair and well done especially with the problem with ship.

would I cruise carnival again?? maybe first cruise with them was exceptional but this out of the 5 cruises I have taken is the bottom of the list. for the caribbean next time I think I will go with royal caribbean Less

Cabin review: Carnival Legend Oceanview Riviera 1151

Nice roomy for a cabin with an ocean view. Was noisy we had the engine problem noise beneath us (could have been isolated to this trips engines problems)The worst part was the the scrapping of chairs and high heels above us possibly the casino area but not positive.

Port and Shore Excursions

Zip-line was awesome we had no problems, had plenty of time and not rushed through. Safety earned HIGH marks. It was easy walking then the brochure had said it would be so just about anyone could do this with the exception of those needing walkers or wheel chairs. Bring a snack with you its a long day and you will need it. a second group in our party had a problem with an accident in the bus there and got stuck twice coming out but not late coming to the ship. They take pictures and you can purchase them on a cd near the end of the trip.

The city itself was very dirty and poor. the port shops and area are very nice and clean.

Tender port - went smooth long tender ride.

would I do it again?? yes but only to try the cave tubing other than that no appeal.

took an all day excursion to tulum to see the myan ruins. Had trouble getting off the ship it took forever and was total chaos. Carnival did a poor job organizing that departure but it was the only one that went poorly. The tour itself was fair the ruins are awesome but the pushy Mexican environment is not fun nor was our guide he talked way to much and his talk was really geared towards buying something from someone he wanted you to buy from. The stop is at a special store made just for tourists. If you take this tour you can break off from the group once at the ruins I recommend it or you will not get to see it all.

Would like to have had more time to see Cozumel but we made it back just as the ships horn was blowing. booking a tour like this is a must through the ship or you are not guaranteed to get back to the ship and have it still there for you.

the shops all close in time for everyone to get back to the ship so don't think you can sneak in a quick peek at the shops.

Would I do this port again? yes to see cozumel itself

Awesome port. we did the stingray, turtle farm and Hell excursion. HIGHLY recommend it. Kelly tours did a great job. Turtle farm was a short visit but had pictures taken with a turtle and held turtles and very informative. Hell was a short visit enough for a drink, some photos and postcard sending. Stingray city was AWESOME must do. Kelly tours did a great job with information and helping in the water with the stingrays. only thing I wished they would have had someone there taking pictures not sure if ours will turn out or not had a little disposable.

Didn't get to see much else due to the tour running long but we were ok with that it was an awesome tour and we would do at least the stingrays again.

Bring a snack

would I do this port again? yes definitely

the only reason this doesn't get a 5plus is because it is a short port of call. AWESOME beautiful and unspoiled as of yet. TAKE A TOUR don't try to do it on your own. the port is small you can see the shops in 30 min. tops. we rented a car because we didn't book anything dumb dumb dumb. the man made beach at the port is good but the west end beach is AWESOME a must see. the roads are small and packed but its a good stop. Wished we would have had more time here.

would I do this port again? yes yes yes a snorkeler and divers dream. Also great for sun bathers and anyone loving beaches.
